The Bonds That Tie Us

It’s the later end of June now and the summer heat is getting pretty stupid. Though Wind and Water spirits still bring cool breezes and rain showers, most of civilians hang around the pools or in their homes with wide open windows. There’s been a burst of curiosity regarding a new shrine that is being built for the Kami of Sin, especially with exciting talk of an upcoming festival. Whether intended or not, this eager gossip has led to the ghost stories falling in popularity. And now, the Fallen Stars are here to put those nasty Rumors to rest once and for all.

This event is split into a few parts and forward dated for convenience. It will end right before the Watanagashi Festival.

The Windchimes Rumor

The main Rumor for this event is the Windchimes Rumor. Though the scam operation will be successful in restoring the Love Kami's faith and discouraging the sale of more windchimes, the lingering effects of the curse will remain.

On the night of June 17th, a sudden meteor shower will be announced over the news. Everyone in the city gathers outside that night for the chance to see shooting stars and the civilians encourage their Fallen Star neighbors to participate. It's a peaceful night and nothing will seem out of the ordinary.

On the morning of June 18th, this will prove to have been misleading. Characters whose names were written thoughtfully on windchimes will have vanished overnight. Their beds are empty and there is no sign of a struggle. A quick investigation will find that the windchime hung in their honor has turned pitch black and somehow negates light rather than reflecting it. It's quite plain to see that the windchimes are involved in the disappearances.

Fortunately, there will be methods to find the missing characters. But the missing aren't helpless either.

Missing characters will wake up in a strange facility, lightly bound and sore from travel. They will be able to band together and not only escape the facility, but finally investigate the group that is causing Rumors.

In other words, there will be two groups for the event. Group A with be focused on action and fighting, while Group B will be focused on investigating a clue gathering.

This part of the event will not immediately go live, giving players some time to plan which group they want to be in. If you want to be in Group B but did not have your characters' name hung up, there will still be ways to get in Group B!

Please understand that Group B is in a disadvantageous position power-wise.

The event is split into pieces so that I (the mod) can keep the timeline in order.

[Dimitri listens not by choice, but necessity. He's not used to being stabbed, thank you. Perhaps a good thing to not have to adapt to. Pulling back his hand, Dimitri is more disappointed than surprised to see his palm covered in his own blood.]

You know mom..? [He can put on airs all that he wants, but Dimitri is a sixteen year old boy. His first thought when he sees his bloody palm is to wish his mother would save him.

But he knows she can't, so tries to bury that childish hope. In its place, Dimitri tries to sound annoyed rather than scared;] I got stabbed. How do you think I feel?

[bluemackerel]

I do, yes. [Dazai replies, not stopping for an instant.] We're quite good friends, actually.

And I dunno. Some people are really good at taking being stabbed, some aren't. I'm someone who is good at it. I guess you're not, though.

[He glances around.]

Do you know this place and the way out? Orrr...any idea where anyone else that isn't thirsting for murder might be?

[melancholie]

[A friend of his mother's...

But where Yuuto blindly throws his trust at people who know Satou, Dimitri does not. Anyway can think they're Satou's friend. She is love incarnate, after all. His decision to trust Dazai is cautious and he's ready to withdraw that at a moment's notice.

Dimitri tries to shift out of Dazai's hold, even if it isn't necessarily his smartest idea. Going with Theta was pretty dumb too.]

Yeah, to both. I used to live here... It's generated by magic.

[bluemackerel]

Magic...ah. No wonder why nothing happened to me. My ability must've cancelled something out.

[If he can actually stand, he'll let him go, but if he's not strong enough...yeah, no. He's leaning towards no.]

Then I suppose our best shot now may be to get out of here, get you some medical care, and report back to your mom. If you could assist me with that, I'd very much appreciate it.

[melancholie]

[Even though he feels awful physically, Dimitri is a Kami. He reminds himself of this as he tries to stand. The boy briefly begins to crumble to the floor again, but his eyes flash violet and he corrects his posture. He appears to be in pain, but Dimitri is too prideful to accept help easily.]

We need to destroy the magic source first. Otherwise this place is like a maze of nightmares. Are you very strong?

[bluemackerel]

[Poor thing, but it's not like Dazai is unused to such displays of pride. He's far TOO used to them, actually.]

Weeeeeelll, I'm not stabbed, I've got the strength of a pretty built 22-year old man, I know some martial arts, AND I have a gun!

So, tentatively, the answer is yes!

[melancholie]

So I have to take you there and disable the magic. Got it.

[Dimitri sighs-- a disguised groan of pain,-- and puts his bloodied hand on the wall.]

Fine. Follow me... We're going to the machine under our feet.

[bluemackerel]

As long as you can.

[That hand is concerning, but he doesn't remark upon it other than that implication.]

Alright. How are we getting there?

[melancholie]

With our feet. [Dimitri sounds a mix of annoyed and tired about that.]

I can't teleport in this building. It's distorted to hell. So come on. The stairs are over there... Unless you can break the floor.

[bluemackerel]

[He could, but he's not going to risk Dimitri taking fall damage from that.]

Stairs it is!

[He begins heading for the stairs, making sure Dimitri stays with him. If there's any medical stations along the way...they're making a stop there. Just so he doesn't bite it.]

[melancholie]

[... yeah, let's stop at a med station.

Dimitri notices one of the doors with a pin pad and stops to open it.]

One sec- [gonna basically fall into the door as it swings open.

Wanting to distract from how pathetic he is:] How many of you were here?

[bluemackerel]

[Probably for the best.]

No problem.

[He leans back against one of the walls.]

Let's see....a fair few to begin with, actually. 15, I believe. There were three of us in the room I was stationed in - Ryoma, myself, and Miss Inaba. There was a whole 'murder fixation' thing...your sister Theta wished for me to ascend to Kami status quite a bit. Said I was perfect for the job.

I might've gotten it, had I not strategized to spare your life and gotten lucky.

[...]

Do you know who Terrel is? Outside of being the leader of this operation and not a Kami? He appears to be pulling the strings.

[melancholie]

[At least Dimitri knows helpful tricks. Like first aid! He finds a medical kit in a desk drawer and searches for the pain killers. There's no much else he can do except to apply a bandage and not leave a blood trail.]

Sounds right. They started off by scaring the kids into a "kill or be killed" situation. Didn't work as well on Yuuto and I, but I guess we were pretty uniquely screwed up when we got here anyway.

[...

He pauses in the middle of opening a bandage.]

It's a big operation. Terrel is... [And Dimitri sounds to be struggling with his own thoughts. After some thought, he decides that he's hesitated too much anyway. Dazai seems smart and will just grill Dimitri if he lies.

Best to give the information without anger as a motivation.] He's my family. In my world.

Here, he's a psychopath. Just as broken by the system as the rest of them.

[bluemackerel]

...Isn't the first time. I see. [That's harrowing. But more harrowing is his description of Terrel.]

So he's not even the person at the top of the chain, if he's broken by the system itself as well. [No. Dazai would have to dig deeper. The problem was the system and whoever created the system.] I see. The name was just brought up as someone to fear. Someone greater than Kami. And now I can imagine a little bit why.

[He shakes his head.] Big operation or no, this is disgusting. It's now on my bracket to tear this place down and whatever else supports it.

[melancholie]

Take a number.

[Dimitri peels open the bandage and turns away while he unbuttons his shirt. He keeps his head up, not wanting to see what it looks like to be stabbed.]

Five years ago, Mom wiped this shitty place off the map. Then it got remade to house Yuuto and I. And now it's back. [Patched up and properly dressed, Dimitri turns to leave again. The pain killers are kicking in fast. He's cheating his body's time to make sure of that.] Let's go. I'm destroying it for real this time.

[bluemackerel]

We're destroying it. [He wants a piece of this pie, thanks. Even if it keeps coming back...so they really are going to have to find a source.] But I'm right behind you.

[He follows after Dimitri. There's an absolute disgust for this place lurching through him by this point. It's definitely something ADA will have to look into...for better or worse.]

[melancholie]

Sure. Piñatas are more fun with a party.

[As they leave the room, Dimitri enters his brother's code code-- 0627-- to seal it from the inside. The lock clicks into place and the pinpad begins beeping.]

There. They'll think Yuuto did a self-sacrifice and come check on it. Let's go while they're busy.

[bluemackerel]

Oh, I do love parties.

[Dazai smiles, but then he watches Dimitri do that, and nods sharply.]

...Oh, yes, he was here, too. Went off with Miss Inaba. Hope they're doing alright...

[Still, no time to waste. Time to get moving.]

[melancholie]

So he decided to come early? Idiot.

[Said affectionately. But Dimitri does seem to increase his pace now that he knows that his older brother is here.]

You're the Dazai who runs ADA, right? Are you going to tell everyone about your field trip?

[bluemackerel]

It seems so. He threw off the plans for my whole test, at least, so it might've been a good thing...

[Dazai keeps pace - probably easily, since he's tall and Dimitri is smol.]

I am, yes. And as for telling everyone...I'm not sure. I'd like to go over information with the people who've taken part, at least. I won't say I'll be telling everyone, but another general meeting with the Fallen Stars can't hurt, especially since we have a revamped location now for exactly that.

[melancholie]

... Okay.

[Dimitri tries to speak curtly, wanting to hide his distrust... But he's 16. And he's almost as bad at lying as Yuuto is.]

Please just be careful of my sisters. I think we'd all rather leave this place behind once and for all, so-.

[He stops at the door to the stairwell,] Mom too. I know she's pretending that this place doesn't scare her, because she doesn't want us to worry. She won't lean on us, because we're her 'children,' so... Instead...

[Of all times to be too tsundere to ask someone to be his mother's friend.]

[bluemackerel]

Of course. I agreed to myself that I'd end up making sure Theta was safe already - she wanted me to be a 'big brother' as well, after all, but I can add more onto the list - however many there are.

[He smiles softly.] If your mother needs someone to assist her, I'll do everything in my power to accomplish exactly that. I would've even without you asking, mind, but you have my word now, too.

[melancholie]

[Dimitri's shoulders tense when he hears Dazai promise to save Theta. That's what he got stabbed over, after all: An attempt to save her. He'd expected to go outside and have Fauna and Chron tell him how stupid he was. Dimitri fully expected for everyone to yell at him and scold him for trying to extend love to Theta. Fauna even tried to kill her..!

His eyes water. He can't open the door or look at Dazai yet.]

It's not fair... My home is perfect. Terrel, Theta, Dad, Mom... Everyone was saved.

Why am I stuck in this world? Why is watching my family get killed the right answer here?

[bluemackerel]

[Well. This is going absolutely not according to plan. Dazai tenses for a moment, not having entirely expected this reaction, but he considers that he quite possibly could've factored it in.

He gently puts one hand on Dimitri's shoulder.]

It isn't. I can't explain why you're stuck here. But your family isn't going to die. Not on my watch they're not. I won't let them.

[Well, now he's getting protective. Dadzai mode has kicked in.]

I can't absolutely promise that everyone will be saved.

I can absolutely promise that I will give everything I have to try for even the possibility, however.

[melancholie]

[Dimitri can hear his own voice shaking. He's crying and it's horrible. His mother was 16 when she became a hero. Compared to her legacy, he's so pathetic. He couldn't even get Theta to hear him out! He just got tricked into a knife.

He dabs his faces with his clean palm. To compensate for his weakness, Dimitri tries to project the brave face he imagines his mother had at his age.]

Y, you shouldn't make a promise like that with a Spacetime Kami. Timelines branch off... That means that in every branch, forever, from now on, you have to keep your word o-or... You're a liar! [oooh scary.

But to Dimitri, this is a plea. He's scared to hope for anything good. In his mind, the timeline branches are mostly bad. Dazai promising a good one is like promising to win a 1 in 1 million gamble.]
