【KAMI&SHRINES】

Kami & Shrines

The Shrine of SpaceTime

Like many shrines, this one can be found on the top level. The shrine is located in the center of a paved vantage point which overlooks the rest of the city, with a garden planted around the perimeter. The shrine proper is a door frame made of prismatic glass, which is always wide open.

Upon entering the door, you find yourself leaving the colourful garden and entering an empty space of monochrome. It's very clearly a different dimension, as it expands on infinitely even where the garden and city should be. The only colour comes from a glass stairway, which reflects rainbow shades, and windows that hang mid-air all around. You cannot go anywhere except back out the door or up the stairs, which will take you high into the sky. At the top of the winding, floating glass staircase is another door. Made of glass, but only reflecting you. Even companions that you stand there with will not be reflected in this door. The glass door cannot be opened or damaged: It silently stands at the top of the stairs, doing absolutely nothing>

Locals will tell you that the Kami of this shrine is gone. Powerless and abandoned, the shrine stands uselessly. No one even attends to the gardens anymore, which is overgrown with weeds in some parts.

The Shrine of Love

Located on the top level is the Shrine of Love. It can be found near the center of the city, where a huge mountain suddenly rises into existence. There is a long path leading to the top. At the foot of the pathway is a small marketplace where trinket shops line the slope. After a few meters of shops, the path gives way to the wilderness. After a thirty minute trek up the stone staircase, visitors will find a huge garden... and a castle.

The Shrine of Love is indeed more castle than shrine. It overlooks the city below and offers a view of the lands outside of Star Sand City. During the day, this shrine is open to visitors. You can stop by a tea room while you await your chance to visit with the Kami or her attendants. The garden is open to the public and the flowers picked from it are said to bring good luck.

You'll often see couples on dates here, but the Kami of Love isn't necessarily romantic. It is said that her love for the city is the very foundation upon which it is built. Her power runs throughout Star Sand City and creates miracles for its people. She can create homes from nothing, add new levels to the city, spawn buildings to turn into shops, and even encourage plentiful harvests. Locals will get very cross with you if you're seen disrespecting the shrine. They believe that if the Kami of Love ever disappeared that their entire city would crumble with her.

The Shrine of Curiosity

Essentially, it is a giant library. There are many archways that lead into various different styles of libraries. There is no logic to the space constraints that you might expect from the building. All libraries can only be reached from the first floor entrance, but may have many floors themselves.

The Shrine is crawling with spirits, all of whom assume the shapes of cats. These cats will flawlessly guide you to the books you are seeking. The only payment they request is being able to sleep on your lap while you read.

It is also possible to live in the Shrine. Many lofts are available on the upper levels and freely accept curious-minded occupants. The lofts are managed by spirits, who make sure they suit the aesthetic and practical needs of the person living there. The spirits managing these rooms ask for nothing but a bedtime story every night.

The Shrine of Destruction

Located on the very bottom level, in the center of the city, is a large cherry blossom tree. It gives off a strange aura; The area isn't exactly dark, but rather it seems that all of the light is being drawn into the tree. The tree itself is cut in half with a large white gem floating in the space between the two halves. Legend goes that if the crystal were to ever stop glowing, then the tree would collapse...

Which is weird. Because until 5 years ago, no one knew this tree was here. There is a dilapidated Shinto shrine building nearby, but it looks to have been neglected for more than just five years... And do you blame anyone? This tree and its rotting neighbor is the Shrine of Destruction. If the Kami living here were to ever wake, then the world itself would be destroyed. That is the kind of horrifying power that resides in that crystal.

People take tribute to this shrine not out of love, but fear. Supposedly though, a prayer to this Kami can negate something in your life. Some people make harmless wishes for their bad luck to be negated or for bad weather to pass, but others... Well. If there's no Kami of Murder, then this is the next best thing.
