A Twisted Rumor

It's the day after the Fallen Star Meeting regarding the recent rumor. As morning brightens the city's night, stories are making their way from the bottom level to the top.

"The cherry blossom tree isn't going to hurt us, is it? It looks so scary."

For those who have learned the truth about rumors, this may especially distressing to hear. There's no time to wait: If anything is going to be done to save the tree's spirit, it must be done now.

The current plan is to address the tree spirit's wish to be remembered and acknowledged by holding a picnic by the lonely cherry blossom tree. Fallen Stars hope to reenact the lively Reblooming parties that had been happening on the upper levels all month. This tree, though the origin of that tradition, exists at the bottom level of Starsand City: Where spirits and kami are still feared. The hope is that this party will soothe the raging spirit and bring it peace... and, ideally, bring back all of the people who have recently gone missing.

But the meeting also ended on a note of caution. If the spirit will not peacefully give up the missing people, then more drastic measures may need to be taken. And... Spoiler alert, but this log is titled tree FIGHT.

Timeline of Events

This log will operate a bit different from normal! It's also an experiment, so if it doesn't work then apologies in advanced! In order to maintain an easy-to-follow timeline of events, there will be a top-level for each stage of the encounter. As the encounter progresses, new top-levels will be added to reflect each stage of the Rumor.

Character top-levels are still welcome, but please try to use the top-levels for time sensitive threads. Threadjacking is welcomed & encouraged, though please be respectful of one another. And of course, make use of the feedback section!

Backtagging is also still welcome. Event stages will be staggered over the course of the next week & past threads still have time to make an impact. Please don't feel rushed!

Oh, how nice of you to ask, Atsushi! Yes, I'd love to share! I'm not at all busy. I just finished talking to a new friend, we finished that battle, and I am starving. Thaaaaank you!

I didn't even have to say it~ you're learning~

[kekekekekek. He nonchalantly reaches into the basket to take a sandwich, and takes a bite.]

You could have asked too, you know...

[But Atsushi's comeback is half-hearted. After all that they just went through, he isn't sure he could relax except with Dazai's company. The tiger being on edge is a result of Atsushi himself being unable to truly calm down. He's waiting for the other shoe to drop...]

This girl I was talking to said that someone befriended that bread monster. Can you believe it?

I could've. But I'm helping you learn better intuition skills. Every moment is a teaching experience.

[He says, before taking a bite of his sandwich. Dazai, in truth, is preparing for something else to happen, too, but he's not letting it show. That all seemed too easy...but that remark makes him chuckle.]

Really, now? That's something I didn't expect. But I suppose it's good if it's a non-violent solution...as long as it doesn't come back to harm us in the end. It'll probably be fine, though. For a while, at the very least.

[Optimistically speaking.]

Though we should still remain on our guard. If these rumors are to be persistent, it's our job to take care of them. We should be treating them like ability user incidents and responding in kind. Maybe round up a few fellow Falling Stars to do the same.

[ADA V2 is on the horizon.]

[His power is neutralized, so Atsushi doesn't notice the tiger calming down in response to Dazai's words. Maybe to someone else, the news that they might still be in danger and need to be on their guard would be terrifying. Atsushi knows that it should make him more nervous. But it comes with a purpose: A positive use for his destructive existence and a way for Atsushi to feel in control of his life.

He lowers the sandwich he had been holding. Then returns to focus, nodding firmly in agreement.]

... Yes, o-of course! After all, working together solved things this time! I'm sure that we can do anything together!

[Seeking approval;]

Right?

Of course! You're the second person I've told that to tonight, actually. Another young lady hoped to hear the same.

So I can't very well say no now. That'd be a terrible move on my part, and I'm not going to build up hope and destroy it from that.

[A beat.]

[not to imply he's jealous or anything but... Dazai is HIS mentor, thank you! tch, that reminds him of Akutagawa and that reminds him that he thought of Akutagawa during the fight and all of this is combining to make Atsushi grumbly and scowly!]

[Oop. Grumpy Atsu. Jealous Atsu. Cute. He'd dote on him if he wasn't so goddamn amused at the second bit. It is taking everything in him right now to not burst into hysterical laughter.

Instead, he looks SASSY.]

'I would never do that to someone'? You're acting like dating you is a punishment, and not a privilege. I'm disappointed, as a regular ladies man, and gentleman's man on the occasion. Haven't you learned aaaaaaanything~?

[One hand on one hip.]

Your girlfriend would be so disappointed to hear that.

[Atsushi is desperate to clear this up. He feels so bad for his fictional girlfriend!]

Why would you even say something like that?

Your girlfriend would cry hearing that. Self! Es! Teem! [He like. Picks up and lowers his hand that was on Atsushi's shoulder in three emphasis pats.]

And Fauna told me there was an odd girl looking for her boyfriend a while ago and you fit the bill, as far as descriptions go. I saw either opportunity for my dearest protege to gain a new love, or to rekindle an old one. We could find this strange lady together! It can be a whole Cyrano de Bergerac thing if you're so underconfident. We'd just need to get an earpiece first and you'd have to listen to every word I said.

Because everyone wants to date me. I'm built different. And I will rebuild you.

[Atsushi squints. Where do the jokes begin and the truth ends with this man..? He appreciates the sentiment and all of the perceived goodwill in Dazai's offer, but--]

No, absolutely not. I'm not dating anyone. I don't have the time.

Other than rebuilding ADA which we haven't started on yet but will.

Y, you know. I need a place to live... food to eat. And people around here are really happy to have me help them out, so. That?

Those sound like a lot of excuses to me. Man. It's fine. If a cute girl shows up here that I can guarantee is into men and is also single, though, I'm setting you the hell up.

After ADA. ADA comes first. Then your social life. [He takes another bite of his sammich.]

And then maybe I'll worry about someone else. Once you are perfect.

[So never. You're always his favorite, Atsushi. With all the pros and cons that come with that.]

[He may have been very wound up about the dating thing (he still is,) but that simmers off when Dazai sets his prioritizes straight. Being able to work for ADA, even in another world, is a lifeline for Atsushi. It means that he hasn't truly lost his home again. And hearing that Dazai won't worry about anyone else until Atsushi is 'perfect' makes him happy.

Because he knows that'll never happen. For once, he's glad to be imperfect. It it keeps his mentor with him, that's fine.]

Yes, sir. Do we need to find a new office building then?

[bluemackerel]

[Oh, Atsushi, you little possessive bean. Dazai hums, nodding.]

Indeed we do! Unless we want to be working off the streets! Which I, personally, do not!

[He finishes his sandwich, licking his fingers clean.]

I suppose since Fukuzawa isn't here....and Kunikida isn't here....that leaves me in charge. That's fine.

[Both of them would say that it is very not fine. But they aren't here, so they don't get a say.]

We get an office building, and then we start getting recruits. You're my favorite, but we still have to get some others so you're not going out there solo and getting yourself hurt. Fauna should be one of them. So that's you, Fauna....we'll keep looking for other Fallen Stars who seem right for the job, and put 'em to work. We'll have a lot to keep up with with these rumors abound.

So! I want to see enthusiasm and determination. Bright and early tomorrow morning, usual time. I'll be dropping by. And waking you up, if you're not awake.

Yes! I've got it, Dazai-san!

[With renewed purpose, Atsushi gives a firm nod of confirmation. He's so focused that he doesn't even question Dazai taking charge or the fact that he is about to do a lot of Dazai's work again. Holding up his gloved fingers, Atsushi counts down the jobs.]

One, office. Two, recruits. Three, Fauna-chan. Four, morning routine... That's it, right?

[bluemackerel]

Indeed so!

[Of course, Atsushi is trying to take all the work upon himself again...]

But we'll be doing this together. You and I both are the founding members of ADA here. So. Almost equal.

[He squeezes his shoulder gently.]

I believe in you, Mister Vice-President. Let's make this place safer together.

Of course-- Wait.

W, wait! That's a bad idea? I can't be Vice-President! I-I'm still a rookie, right? I can't do anything without your help! How am I going to help you?

You're not a rookie anymore! You've spent enough time with the Agency! Congratulations on the impromptu promotion! I don't see anyone else qualified to be my vice president. Unless... you'd rather me give it to Fauna, but I believe she'd be quite overwhelmed. She's even more of a rookie than you are, you know.

[He has to tease a little bit.]

...But you've proven time and time again that you can. The Guild? The Rats in the House of the Dead? You didn't need me there to finish those missions off - that second one least of all. [He shakes his head.] You're going to help me by being yourself. Doing what you've done before. Just sharing some of the authority with me.

You already got a taste of that when Kyouka joined us. This is just the next...unexpected step, since we're in a new world.
