A Twisted Rumor

It's the day after the Fallen Star Meeting regarding the recent rumor. As morning brightens the city's night, stories are making their way from the bottom level to the top.

"The cherry blossom tree isn't going to hurt us, is it? It looks so scary."

For those who have learned the truth about rumors, this may especially distressing to hear. There's no time to wait: If anything is going to be done to save the tree's spirit, it must be done now.

The current plan is to address the tree spirit's wish to be remembered and acknowledged by holding a picnic by the lonely cherry blossom tree. Fallen Stars hope to reenact the lively Reblooming parties that had been happening on the upper levels all month. This tree, though the origin of that tradition, exists at the bottom level of Starsand City: Where spirits and kami are still feared. The hope is that this party will soothe the raging spirit and bring it peace... and, ideally, bring back all of the people who have recently gone missing.

But the meeting also ended on a note of caution. If the spirit will not peacefully give up the missing people, then more drastic measures may need to be taken. And... Spoiler alert, but this log is titled tree FIGHT.

Timeline of Events

This log will operate a bit different from normal! It's also an experiment, so if it doesn't work then apologies in advanced! In order to maintain an easy-to-follow timeline of events, there will be a top-level for each stage of the encounter. As the encounter progresses, new top-levels will be added to reflect each stage of the Rumor.

Character top-levels are still welcome, but please try to use the top-levels for time sensitive threads. Threadjacking is welcomed & encouraged, though please be respectful of one another. And of course, make use of the feedback section!

Backtagging is also still welcome. Event stages will be staggered over the course of the next week & past threads still have time to make an impact. Please don't feel rushed!

... What? Here to gloat at how useless I was? Go ahead, I probably deserve it.

Eh~ Will that make you feel better about yourself, Fauna?

[While it would be very easy to push some buttons and make her angry, Dimitri is too tired.

Also he can be nice sometimes.

He keeps his hands behind his back, smiling towards the crowd and away from Fauna.]

Isn't it nice to see everyone safe and well? All of that effort really did bring about a miracle.

[She ignores that first part. Would it make her feel better? Honestly... yeah, that's how the world is. It's better to just reject her. So why isn't he?]

That's how it works, yeah.

[She looks up at the sky.]

When you defeat a monster, whatever bizarre effects it's had usually get fixed.

[melancholie]

Yes, it's nice when a world allows such a happy pattern to exist.

[Dimitri's smile softens. He notices his sister trying to get her bearings and the way that Satou has all but tackled Mikale into the grass. Then he sighs, casting his violet gaze towards Fauna.]

Even if you run away, they'll still be here. And your feelings will continue to fester and rot, until you cannot recognize what they are anymore.

Or maybe you already forgot what they originally looked like?

[nightwild]

[Her eyes, brown flecked with the lion's gold, look to Chron, to Satou, to Mikale... and away from Dimitri, unable to meet his gaze.]

... Why not? They've been festering like this ever since a mistake like me was born. Maybe it's better if I just forget everything I've felt until now.

[melancholie]

I~ don't think that you want to, though.

[He shrugs. It's not his place to play therapist when he isn't emotionally stable either.]

You should go see Chron. You may be happy to fester in your emotions, but surely you don't want for her to rotted away by worrying?

[nightwild]

[She flinches. The idea that Chron might want to see her... It's something tantalizing, something she wishes for, yet-

It can't be possible, after all. Who would worry about her?]

... Would she want to see me? After all of that, it was my fault, after all.

[melancholie]

Your fault? This is all your fault? Don't make me laugh, Fauna. I'm too tired for it.

[oh right, dimitri is an asshole. he's remembered his true calling.

He looks back at his sister. His voice gradually becomes heated by anger;]

I warned her, time and again, that she might get swept in that Rumor. I told her that she would disappear if she didn't stop helping people. But she kept going, insisting that she didn't have to be afraid of disappearing. Chron knew we'd save her if she did.

[He laughs. As promised, it is a tired laugh. It dissolves the mounting anger and replaces that tone with false amusement.]

My sister is a brave and selfless idiot. Don't take credit for her kindness and call it your fault. It's Chron's fault that she's kind.

[nightwild]

[Fauna grimaces. She wants to argue. She doesn't deservethe kindness of someone like Chron.

But what can she say? That isn't spitting on Chron's kindness?]

... Why aren't you with her?

[melancholie]

[He lets the previous topic slip away, countering her question rather than answering it.]

Why aren't you?

[nightwild]

I already told you why.

But you're her family, aren't you?

[melancholie]

[Dimitri pauses, considering his level of honesty.

Then shakes his head.]

Nope. I was an only child. Before I 'fell' like the rest of you, I did not know that she could even exist.

They only call me their 'brother' out of obligation.

[nightwild]

...

Uhhhhh what.

[melancholie]

[He laughs.]

What I'm saying is~ I'm not really anyone's family! So no. I don't need to go see her. Besides. I'm sick of babysitting you all. Once I see that you're not hurting that person, I'll leave and never come back.

[nightwild]

[Okay. You know what?

Fauna reaches out and grabs Dimitri by the collar.]

Nope.

[melancholie]

[His smile is unchanged. After all, it was never a real smile to begin with.]

Why? Does that bother you, Fauna?

[nightwild]

[She just stares levelly. Her body is changed by her power use, and so she's stronger than she was before, but she's holding the grip to not be painful, just to stop from running.]

You being a hypocrite bothers me.

[melancholie]

And? I thought you hated me already. What does one new dislikable trait have to do with this?

[nightwild]

You're an asshole.

But when you got mad at me for endangering Chron, when we went up the shrine... That wasn't obligation. You weren't that mad just because of 'obligation'.

[melancholie]

[... She's got him there. He still tries to feign a smile, but some of his actual teenager reality is weakening the act;]

What can I say? I like being angry and took an easy excuse for it.

Now who's taking credit for things?

You care. And you said it yourself, she's brave and selfless. There's no way she doesn't feel the same.

[melancholie]

[It has been a while since he felt like a child... and boy howdy, does he hate it.]

[Dimitri tries to pour some heat back into his tone. It's the easiest way to disguise his childish fears.]

I made myself invisible on purpose. It's important that no one knows that I exist right now.

[nightwild]

Yeah? Unfortunately, I'm dumb. I don't know why it's important, and I don't really care.

But I have enough of my own power left to be invisible myself if I have to, and I will make you go see her, right now. Your choice is just in whether you walk there yourself, or whether I pick you up and carry you.

[Her lion shift has her a bit more muscular than she normally is. It's clear that she's not bluffing.]
