A Twisted Rumor

It's the day after the Fallen Star Meeting regarding the recent rumor. As morning brightens the city's night, stories are making their way from the bottom level to the top.

"The cherry blossom tree isn't going to hurt us, is it? It looks so scary."

For those who have learned the truth about rumors, this may especially distressing to hear. There's no time to wait: If anything is going to be done to save the tree's spirit, it must be done now.

The current plan is to address the tree spirit's wish to be remembered and acknowledged by holding a picnic by the lonely cherry blossom tree. Fallen Stars hope to reenact the lively Reblooming parties that had been happening on the upper levels all month. This tree, though the origin of that tradition, exists at the bottom level of Starsand City: Where spirits and kami are still feared. The hope is that this party will soothe the raging spirit and bring it peace... and, ideally, bring back all of the people who have recently gone missing.

But the meeting also ended on a note of caution. If the spirit will not peacefully give up the missing people, then more drastic measures may need to be taken. And... Spoiler alert, but this log is titled tree FIGHT.

Timeline of Events

This log will operate a bit different from normal! It's also an experiment, so if it doesn't work then apologies in advanced! In order to maintain an easy-to-follow timeline of events, there will be a top-level for each stage of the encounter. As the encounter progresses, new top-levels will be added to reflect each stage of the Rumor.

Character top-levels are still welcome, but please try to use the top-levels for time sensitive threads. Threadjacking is welcomed & encouraged, though please be respectful of one another. And of course, make use of the feedback section!

Backtagging is also still welcome. Event stages will be staggered over the course of the next week & past threads still have time to make an impact. Please don't feel rushed!

[Velda looks around in awe at the civilians approaching, the rescued reappearing. She walks through the falling flowers, starry-eyed, and if anyone comes up to her happily, she'll just kind of freeze, smile, and babble.]

Oh, uh, thanks! I mean, no problem! I'm just glad everyone's safe, and to be honest, everyone being nice all of a sudden is all we really need... I mean, thank you?

[You can also just find her sitting on one of the picnic blankets, nervously looking at the food provided.]

[Atsushi is also settled on one of the blankets, though he's hesitant to open the baskets right away. There's so much free food..! It feels like a trap..!]

Looks like the picnic idea really caught on in the end, huh?

[She hesitates, then takes a checkerboard sandwich and eats it, her eyes sparkling.]

Yeah, even with how hard it was to get anybody to listen! Who knew curing the Rumour would fix everything right away?

It is really convenient, isn't it? Though, I hope we don't have to deal with anymore of those things.

[He follows her lead, picking out a sandwich and a drink.]

That was a handful... The tree, that bread, [frowns at his sandwich. inspects it for eyes,] ... Whatever that slime monster was.

[fallmushrooms]

Well, it turned out the bread made a friend. [giggle] So I guess anything can happen here, and we don't have to worry! Or does that mean we really have to worry? Sometimes I can't tell.

[undermoonlight]

[Atsushi was about to bite into a sandwich, but now he has to stop.]

... The bread did what now? I thought you all defeated it?

[fallmushrooms]

Well, defeated as in it isn't rampaging any more, not defeated as in died... It got turned into a minor spirit and someone contracted it and put it in their school ID.

[undermoonlight]

... And here I was trying to make sense of the thing I was fighting. There's no sense or logic in this world at all, is there?

[He sighs! Tired! Annoyed!

... But relieved all the same.]

I'm glad none of them had to be killed.

[fallmushrooms]

Yeah, it's... kind of scary, isn't it? Like, we have all these legends of wars and stories about the Evil Queen that they use at school presentations to scare you into behaving, but here we're actually in danger.

[undermoonlight]

I mean... My home wasn't too much better. But at least the things there made sense... and I could actually do something about them. Spirits, kami, Rumors, creepy goo... I don't know how much of a help I'll be against those things.

[fallmushrooms]

Wait, can't you? Even if you can't fight, maybe you're good at talking things down!

[undermoonlight]

No, I... kinda failed that in training.

Maybe it'll all make sense later. There might be a book that can help..?

[fallmushrooms]

Book? I guess there's books for everything. You mean about the world?

[undermoonlight]

Yeah... or maybe about that goo. The kami talked like she'd met it before. If she has, surely someone mentioned it in a book?

She did? I guess she did. Then we might as well look! There's no harm in researching. That's usually how these things go.
