A Twisted Rumor

It's the day after the Fallen Star Meeting regarding the recent rumor. As morning brightens the city's night, stories are making their way from the bottom level to the top.

"The cherry blossom tree isn't going to hurt us, is it? It looks so scary."

For those who have learned the truth about rumors, this may especially distressing to hear. There's no time to wait: If anything is going to be done to save the tree's spirit, it must be done now.

The current plan is to address the tree spirit's wish to be remembered and acknowledged by holding a picnic by the lonely cherry blossom tree. Fallen Stars hope to reenact the lively Reblooming parties that had been happening on the upper levels all month. This tree, though the origin of that tradition, exists at the bottom level of Starsand City: Where spirits and kami are still feared. The hope is that this party will soothe the raging spirit and bring it peace... and, ideally, bring back all of the people who have recently gone missing.

But the meeting also ended on a note of caution. If the spirit will not peacefully give up the missing people, then more drastic measures may need to be taken. And... Spoiler alert, but this log is titled tree FIGHT.

Timeline of Events

This log will operate a bit different from normal! It's also an experiment, so if it doesn't work then apologies in advanced! In order to maintain an easy-to-follow timeline of events, there will be a top-level for each stage of the encounter. As the encounter progresses, new top-levels will be added to reflect each stage of the Rumor.

Character top-levels are still welcome, but please try to use the top-levels for time sensitive threads. Threadjacking is welcomed & encouraged, though please be respectful of one another. And of course, make use of the feedback section!

Backtagging is also still welcome. Event stages will be staggered over the course of the next week & past threads still have time to make an impact. Please don't feel rushed!

Good. The more of us who can act in that instant, the better. And it... wouldn't be the first time. [Of course, the first time he'd started with a fragment of that soul and kind of... beaten people up for the rest, but that's neither here nor there. With immediate access to the fragments, he could at least try.]

For what it's worth, I'm a dhampir. Part vampire, part human. The story behind that is complicated, but suffice to say I have fairly intimate experience with broken souls. I can give you the long version later, if you'd like.

[With a shriek of surprise, the goo begins to flee from Yor. This isn't a fight worth picking! She's scary!!]

It seems that I neglected to mention that I am a kami myself, although certainly not of this world. But yes, let us not talk too much--we do not have the time.

[Predictably, the goo beings begin swarming around Echidna. They reach out to her, goopy tears piling at their not-quite-feet.]

"You can? We could eat? We could feel? We could experience? If only we make a contract with you?"

That's right. You don't stand anything to lose in the slightest bit! In fact, you have much more to gain, don't you?

However.

I will only choose one. It is not every day that an opportunity like this arises from the Witch of Greed, so I would like for the one who opts to make a contract with me to be the most interesting one. The one who will relieve me of my boredom. You may do whatever you wish to achieve that goal. If you're that desperate to doing something like that... such a task should be simple, right?

[Their eager forms begin to sway, heads turning to 'look' at one another: Their competition.]

I am known as the Witch of Greed. I seek knowledge. To see something new. I am not of this world, so anything will do. Of course, I would also not say 'no' to eliminating the competition.

After all, if there is only one of you left...

[The other fellow was having a negative reaction to his Grail Sphere, huh? Hm... Kevin would have to make a note of that. Something about him was clearly not human, but this wasn't the time to be asking questions. Soma clearly had a plan and Kevin was going to honor it. Tau had illusions covered and he hopes that she'd have the energy to keep it up. It looked like she had a lot of focus in that ability.]

Yeah, I can definitely pull that off again. This wouldn't be the first exorcism that I've been a part of. But if you've got any other plans, then I'm down to hear 'em.

[Kevin turns to listen out to Hanyuu's speech. He grits his teeth because he could sense something was off with her. Almost like she was pushing herself a little too hard. Trust was one thing, but would it be enough? There was only one way to find out! Kevin decides to throw his hat into the speech ring too.]

--She's right, you know! Miracles are born whenever people join hands together for a single cause! And we've gathered here together to save you! All you gotta do is take that first step forward and forge that trail of happiness with your own hands!

[Even as he prepares to answer Kevin's question, he notices a vital flaw in the plan - Madoka is engaged elsewhere. She won't be able to make it in time. No plan of engagement survives first contact with the enemy. He has to think quick to modify the mental image he had drawn up...

...and then Hanyuu decides to be a shounen hero. Well... if she was successful in her attempt, they wouldn't need Madoka's bow after all. But he was very quickly learning that putting all your bets on one play was a fool's errand. He turns to Kevin, drawing a giant, glowing greatsword from somewhere inside his coat. Seriously, where was he hiding that thing? It's longer than he is tall!]

If Hanyuu's gambit fails, I'm going to need you to strike the spirit with this. It's a holy weapon - it'll purify anything it cuts. Madoka won't be able to fire from where she is right now, and... there are reasons I can't strike the blow myself. [Translation: He does not want to accidentally Dominate the deranged kami.]

I'm going to try to reconstitute the spirit before it can dissipate and give it a new life by combining it with another soul with alchemy. The Rumor that did this to it should have no purchase on that new form.

[He offers the sword to Kevin, his face deadly serious.]

This is our last resort. Can I trust you?

I would like to hope that it's not literal, because I'm not so sure anyone has a big enough mouth to eat something that size! Bread, bread... do you know what you're not supposed to put on bread?

[Kokichi, staring the bread monster over, just...slowly arches a brow.]

...Seriously?

[He actually got to the trouble of getting a gun and everything.]

Unless we've got some kind of gigantic stick of butter and a way to toast it, I say we just tear it apart. Bread isn't too hard to tear.

[Bread is about his level of threat though, yeah.]

After what appeared to be a peaceful exchange, the 'minor' spirits begin to buzz with new enthusiasm. Some of them take new forms made out of the glittery back goo and begin fighting each other, clawing and ripping at the other until they absorb their enemy's goo and become larger themselves. Other spirits instead choose to throw themselves at the picnic blankets, consuming the food and making a mess. There are even goo shaped forms that rush at Fallen Stars who are inside of the barrier, attacking them with a violent urgency that wasn't there before.

"I want the contract! I want to be real! Make me real!"

These spirits can be fought in groups of 1-3. Please indicate in your comment title if you want others to join in or if you'd rather fight solo. Ex.: "Seeking 2 Fighters" or "Solo Fight." They cannot be combined with Fights A, B, or C. The scale of the fight will match the number of participants.

[Like the loyal helper he is, Atsushi rushed in after Dazai. Just another melee fighter, though he's yet to transform his body into that of the weretiger. Instead, Atsushi is taking the next few seconds to assess the situation. He doesn't want to get in the way of two melee fighters and a shotgun.]

Is there a plan in place?

[Battler's learned one thing amongst his time dealing with magics of all shapes and sizes, and one big thing is to never make promises you can't keep. Making someone - anyone - 'real' was a complicated process, and he wasn't even remotely going to get into the...complicated nature of 'becoming human'. That's too much, man.

What matter now is that he's probably staring down a battle. Well. He learned from his dear aunts. A rifle never hurt to bring to a confrontation.]

...Ahhh, it's just useless. Alright, you confused goops. Let's...take care of business.

[He's not too happy with it. He'll probably end up punching them if he gets too frustrated. Because that's the kind of moron he is.]

[The creature's torso opens like a mouth and swallows the magic projectiles, then shoots them out of its 'mouth' at Pidonus. Even when Dazai shoots it, the strange creature seems unbothered. The holes fill over with more goo and it continues its attempts to reach the bard's neck.]

"If only we were real. ♪ If only we were real. ♪ Then maybe you could hurt us. ♪"

[It sings in a cruel tone, grin spreading unnaturally on its face.]

[She can't believe she's doing this. But her peaceful life has been disrupted and her favorite bakery closed due to Rumor shenanigans, leaving Hillis with little choice. If she wants to be happy, she need to solve this. And, well... This is a spring issue. So perhaps it is an Inoaden concern as well.

Sighing when she lands, Hillis drops from the sky and to Battler's side. The grass around them springs to life with red roses and thorny vines, with Hillis herself calming walking just a few inches ahead of Battler.]

Do you even have a plan, Battler?

[The bread monster uses its huge tongue to sweep up the cookie offering, too delighted to immediately notice that there's a team of heroes wondering how to cook it. With childish glee, it stomps its six bready feet.]

"More more! Let's picnic more!"

[And then tries to use its tongue to knock Velda off of her broom.]

[The crying spirit gasps, her hollow eyes widening unnaturally on her face. Everyone's hope-filled words seem to be reaching her and she cautiously lifts her arms to Hanyuu-- Only to hesitate.
Terror once again consumes the spirit and their roots begin to push out in resistance.]

"You can't come close! What if they ensnare you too?!"

[Ah. Well. Now he's not alone.]

So nice of you to make it, Hillis! Ihihihi!
