【EVENT】 New Year's Wishful Dreaming
.
Wishful Dreaming Event
On the Eve of the New Year, the city of Starsand is surprisingly quiet. For a place so eager to throw parties, you might think that the streets would be full of life. But instead, Starsand’s streets are quiet and it’s citizens shutting down shops early. In this city, the last night of the year is contemplative and quiet. Citizens might make their last shrine visits, but it’s uncommon to see them out past 11.
They say that it’s important to fall asleep before the New Year, because you want to treasure your first dream of the New Year. Supposedly it’s lucky and prophetic. If you write it down and remember it, that dream can even guide you to your greatest desire. And rumors are always good ideas in Starsand.
Sleep comes easy on this night. Characters will find themselves getting drowsy by 4am at the latest. When they do fall asleep, they fall into a deep and elaborate dream.

[Kanade's eyes drift to the side, like she's picking one particular sheet of music out among all the hundreds plastered on the wall. There's no title on the page, no lyrics, and nothing about the notes scribbled on it seem anything like Niigo's music, but the way she stares at the wall... it's a mess of regret, and guilt.]
It's a curse as well. I hurt my father in an irreparable way because of my music. It's been two years, but... he's still in the hospital, because of me.
[And that's why she doesn't deserve to be happy.]

Because of your music? How could that even be?
[ It makes no sense to him. Either way, he's carefully making his way over to check out the entire mess of music, looking for the specific sheet she's staring at. ]

[Her words are slow, and careful. It's not like this is some deep dark secret that can never see the light of day; she's opened up to other people about it, of course. But there's still so much shame that digs into her heart when she speaks of this. Self-loathing so intense it seeps out into her voice when she continues to speak.]
But the people he worked for, his clients... they didn't always think my father's music would resonate with the right people. They thought his music was too old-fashioned, and he had trouble finding work...
[If Rinne's able to read music, he'll notice that the melody is a sort of upbeat little jingle. Nothing like the dark, raw songs in the rest of Niigo's discography, oddly enough. But even if he has no eye for it, there's something interesting about the notes themselves; most are done in a very neat, precise hand, while several bars in the middle are a little more sloppy, like someone less practiced in writing out sheet music had added pieces there.]
... One day, I saw him working hard on a song for a competition he entered. All I wanted was to help take some of the pressure off his shoulders, so I helped him compose part of the melody. [She pulls her legs in close to her chest, like she's trying to curl in on herself.] My father won the competition, but... all they cared about was the part I wrote. It got popular enough to be used in a commercial, and suddenly, all my father's clients wanted him to produce work like that. He couldn't, and...
[That day will forever be burned into her mind. Calling out to her father, wondering why he'd slept in so late into the morning, and then...
Sirens. Doctors. Someone trying to explain to her middle-school self the psychological effects of stress and overwork. Trashing her father's room when she found his journal, deciding then that maybe she should just starve to death...]
... He's never been the same. All because of me.

Rinne's first instinct is to bow his head. ]
I'm sorry for what you and your family have been through. I can't imagine how that feels.
[ His father is a scumbag, his mother was dead (as far as he knew), and for as much as he loved living with his grandparents, his life hadn't been the same since his grandfather passed away. ]
However... you shouldn't blame yourself. It sounds as if he was under a lot of pressure from those clients of his to capture lightning in a bottle again. Even if it was your words, that doesn't mean it's your burden to bear.
I can't speak for your father, but your music is important, Yoisaki Kanade. I believe it'll win the day, as it has before-- but, I don't believe it can fully grow within these doors. You have to plant the foundation with your circle mates... with your friends.
