Wishful Dreaming Event

On the Eve of the New Year, the city of Starsand is surprisingly quiet. For a place so eager to throw parties, you might think that the streets would be full of life. But instead, Starsand’s streets are quiet and it’s citizens shutting down shops early. In this city, the last night of the year is contemplative and quiet. Citizens might make their last shrine visits, but it’s uncommon to see them out past 11.

They say that it’s important to fall asleep before the New Year, because you want to treasure your first dream of the New Year. Supposedly it’s lucky and prophetic. If you write it down and remember it, that dream can even guide you to your greatest desire. And rumors are always good ideas in Starsand.

Sleep comes easy on this night. Characters will find themselves getting drowsy by 4am at the latest. When they do fall asleep, they fall into a deep and elaborate dream.

OOC NOTES

The first dream of the New Year will show characters their wishes come true. They will get to enjoy the life they long for. But strangely, they may find other Fallen Stars wandering into their dreams. These encounters may shake them out of their dreamlike state and make them aware that the dream is just that: A dream. If the dreamer denies their dream or has doubts, then the dreamscape will fall apart into a nightmare before both dreamer and visitor wake up.

It is possible to have multiple dreams: Characters must wake between dreams, even if just briefly, then fall back asleep in order to change their dream. There can be multiple visitors before the dream ends for good.

On the morning of January 1st, all characters who had a dream will find a prismatic crystal clenched in the palm of their hands. The crystal will reflect the contents of their dream, so long as they hold the same wish. If they change wishes or lose faith, then the crystal will turn black and melt into Rumor goo.

NPC characters may reply to dreams with clues. Please indicate which characters you want to receive clues by putting a “*” in their toplevel title. You may request clues for up to 3 characters. Thank you for your help!

They can speak of me how they wish. But it would take thousands of years worth of storytelling to rewrite my legend into a Rumor. I don’t fear the gossip, nor do I thrive off their praise.

I’m too old for that to matter anymore.

But that even if it doesn't make a Rumor or anythin'... that doesn't change how mean it is. 'Sides. If people're already judgin' based on appearance. Who's to say that it might not happen ta someone else, too?

Is it on that note that you visit me? I’m sure even you Fallen Stars have noticed the recent rumor being spread. Fortunately, few are stupid enough to want ‘destruction’ in their new year… But you should be careful that no one sees you down here. Unless you want a rumor about yourself.

Yeah-- Oh. Don't worry. I can make myself hidden when I come over, as long as I ain't holdin' anything physical.

[ So today was a bit of an exception. ]

And if a rumor starts 'bout me... I'll just counter it!

[ She was bullied when she was younger because of rumors, after all. Because of how she looked--blonde with blue eyes, people calling her a foreigner even though she was born in Japan. ]

[He has no reason not to trust her judgment on that. Ushio may be weird and he doesn’t always know how to handle her, but she hasn’t been foolish.]

To what do I actually owe the honor of a visit, then? I’ve doubts this is all about a mug.

So, Ryoko told me that Ariel might've mentioned ya as someone who might be able ta save someone who's been distorted!

[Gira has a lot of thoughts regarding Ariel, most of which he knows to keep to himself.]

If I knew in its entirety, then I’d have cured Yuuto. The most I may offer is a clue, though I wouldn’t know what that is.

She did. Apparently we need the help from you and two others. So anythin' that ya know, no matter how small it is. I'd 'preciate it. Whether it be about distortions or... anything ya think that might help.

[He really has to wonder why Ariel brought him up in all of this. Gira does look to be deep in thought, frowning and narrowing his eyes.]

Things like ‘distortions’ have never been an issue before. Perhaps because faith was in short supply and focused primarily on positive kami. But my instinct has always been to dispatch them. No kami wishes to harm the people who love them.

So it's 'cause people were only focusing on pure positivity back then...? I wonder if there needs ta be some sort of balance? Like... havin' kami that focus on more negative aspects without 'em becomin' distortions? 'Cause people're aren't pure good.

That would be my role. Destruction, darkness- I take those concepts on without falling to ruin. The girls of life and death balance each other as well.

[Gira slowly shakes his head,] Rumors, yes; We’ve had them in the past. They were easy enough to hunt down. But Distortions, I’ve never encountered.

... I see.

[ She wonders if there's anything they're missing, but she's not smart enough to think of anything off the top of her head. Maybe she'll talk about this with the others. Brainstorm session. ]

Do ya know what the first Rumor was at all?

It would have been thousands of years ago. If a harvest failed and no one understood why, for example, it was possible to invent a Rumor to blame. Destroying them may not solve anything, but it would be cathartic.

As humans learned about their world through science, there came to be less need for Rumors. The same could be said for kami.

So it was just... by accident? Like they needed somethin' ta blame, so that somethin' just so happened ta become a Rumor?

[ That's awful, actually. ]

That's why the lower parts of this place're don't have a lot of spirits or other shrines, huh. Does that mean there aren't really much kami outside this city?

[ Are all the kami just... concentrated here? ]

That has always been how it is. In order to have blessings, there must be room for curses. Rumors exist opposite of kami. Though that lowest level engages in a lot of hatred towards spirits; I was not surprised that our first Rumor appeared there.

As for the outside world, I am not sure. It has not been safe for a long time.

That's... kinda sad.

[ She says that in a rather quiet tone.

She says that from a place of understanding. As someone who might even be considered as someone who took the power of a false kami. ]

But people're were able ta go out ta that forest through the train, right? So it can't all be entirely bad!

But there were no people, were there?

I wouldn't expect people in a forest, gramps.

But your train ride was many days. No one mentioned seeing any other towns or cities along the way.

That's true. But then again, I wasn't on that trip. All I know is what I was told. So... there's no more humans outside of this city?

[Gira is silent for a long few seconds.

Then he shakes his head.]

Focus on this city first.

[ Ushio is silent for a moment... but then, she nods, a serious gleam in her eyes. ]

I see. Got it. This city is important to me and many people, so I'll protect it with everything I have.

[destructomatch]

Good. [He sighs in relief.]

One step at a time, as they say... Is that all you needed from me, Ushio?

[ There might be things later, but that's something that she'll deal with at a later date. ]

[ She bows her head and then -- given that she wants to play things smart, she sinks into her shadow and slinks away. ]
