Star Sand City
So Fantasy Reclaimed Reality,
Welcome to the world that fantasy took back.
According to the locals, you are not the first stranger from another world to be dragged to this one. This is a world that, up until five years ago, did not know magic. Fantasy did not expand beyond its designated shelves of the library; There were no gods or spirits, only science and reason.
But five years ago, the secret was blown. Magical 'spirits' exist in this world. You may have seen them as flickers of light; Souls without a body. They were once invisible and powerless, existing silently alongside the rest of the living. But with enough faith from the living, spirits can manifest. They can even have the magic powers that others believe them to have.
Nowadays, spirits and magic are impossible to ignore. Magic has transformed the architecture, average people are learning spirit magic, and technology is being upgraded with this new power. Electricity is going out of favor; Spirits now power homes in exchange for shrine offerings and prayers. Though traces of the old era still exist, they are slowly being replaced by magic. Every city is changing at a different pace depending on how the citizens reacted to the news of spirits.
But you're not here for a lore drop, are you? You just got here.
New arrivals have become commonplace in the City of Star Sand. In fact, the city is named for this phenomena; People from other worlds ("stars") appear so frequently that it's like a beach of sand. Even those who normally travel between worlds have found it impossible to leave the pull of the Star Sand once they get here. Some people have even come from other time periods. (the date here is 2025.) No other city is reporting this unique problem for some reason.
Roleplay-wise; This is a semi-private sandbox for a modern-fantasy blended setting. Characters can either be whisked away from their homes or wake up as AUed residents. While there will be a lot of background lore and a mystery to dig your teeth into, it's all optional. First and foremost, the sandbox is meant to be played in. The City of Star Sand is a very flexible place to stretch your imagination. Some parts of the city may just seem like normal Tokyo, while others might feel like a DnD campaign. The world will gradually expand as the sandbox takes off as well, so you'll be able to submit your own cities with unique cultures.
The Mingle is meant for dipping your toes into the setting! You're more than welcome to add journal entries with your own prompts~.

New Arrival Freebies
When you arrived, it was without warning. Even the locals around you will say that they blinked and you were just there. You might be mid-action or feel like you're waking from sleep, but however it happened you're here now.
The locals inform you that this is a rather common occurrence. There's no way home yet, but they will make sure you're comfortable until they find a solution. And that flicker of light you just saw? The glistening rainbow that darted about in the corner of your vision? That's a spirit. They'll help you too.
You're given instructions to go to the shops that have rainbow star-themed sun catchers hanging outside their doors. These places will give you free clothes, food, and even direct you towards free housing. The catch? You'll need to help with cleaning one of the nearby shrines. Just sweeping up leaves or wiping down the visible surfaces is enough. And strangely, it looks like it rained... pastel paint recently? There are drops of pastel paint everywhere for some reason. Just what kind of weather awaits you here?

Shrine of Spacetime
If you're the curious type, you may have asked why you can't get home. There are powerful gods here, right? Powered by faith? Why hasn't everyone thought to worship a Kami of Spacetime into existence? Couldn't they send you all home?
The answer, if you should dig deeper, is at the Shrine of Spacetime.
You will have to climb a flight of floating stairs to get here, with the gap between them getting wider as you ascend higher. It was beautifully sunny a moment ago, but once you're a few meters into the sky it will turn dark and cold. You can see windows hanging all around and may catch glimpses into them, but they reflect nothing. Not even you.
And then, the stairs stop. There is nothing up here but a floating archway. The door encased in the stone is closed and no amount of magic will open it.
Back on the ground, locals will explain that the door is the Timespace Kami's shrine. People have been praying for a way home, but nothing has happened. No Kami has appeared. There are rumors that the Kami sleeps beyond that door. There is a tea room nearby, which will serve you free tea in exchange for a prayer to the mysterious Kami. They encourage people to sit together and discuss the situation. Maybe that will help the Kami gain power? Or perhaps there is no Kami to empower to begin with.

Rumor of the Starsnatcher
If you're traveling to Level Four, the city level right below the top, then maybe you've heard this rumor. Whispered in many variations and tones, it tends to go like this:
"There exists a creature on the 4th level. A gentleman dressed in fine clothes, glowing star ornaments dangling from his belt. To the rest of us, he is completely harmless. But should you be one of the stars fallen from another world, he is not so peaceful... Take one look at his face and he'll transform into a beast. This beast claws the other worlders apart and drags their bodies to the Shrine of Timespace. I heard it's a warning!"
... Of course, no one has actually report any bodies. You won't find any corpses at the shrine, nor any signs of blood or violence. But on the 4th floor, there have been many sightings of the man with stars on his belt. They say that so long as you don't try to look him in the face, he probably won't attack you... Probably. But there are some recent claw marks on buildings that people say were left by the Starsnatcher.
The Rumor is also said to not be able to pass through closed doors. So if you do find him chasing you, there is a quick way to get him off your tail.
This Rumor can be fought multiple times. His attacking style is physical, with a focus on scratching with his claw-like nails. He is capable of inhuman agility. When a door is closed between you, he will halt his chase and vanish. Every time that he is defeated, one of the stars from his belt will be left behind. When brought to the Shrine of Timespace, these stars shoot out of the holder's hand and out of sight.

Rumor of the Tea Too Calming
Back on the 5th floor, a new cafe has opened! The little old woman who runs this cafe was delighted when someone sponsored her dream. In this world where money is less of an issue, she can now chase her fifty year dream of selling her own tea blends. Everyone in the neighborhood is very excited for her. Other shops have been passing out flyers that advertise the cafe's signature drink: The World's Most Relaxing Tea.
It is said that the flavor of this tea is so refreshing that you'll be reminded of better days. Drinking it will cause your stress and worries to leave your soul! Of course, this is probably some silly embellishment. While the old woman does admit that there is spirit magic involved, she says that it's only meant to be taste refreshing. Her mysterious sponsor made those flyers and she finds them rather embarrassing, but figures they were meant to be a silly joke.
But take a sip of the tea, and you will find that it is indeed very relaxing. If your thoughts linger on it, you'll begin to nod off into an unexpected nap. Victims of this extremely relaxing tea will begin talking in their sleep; They mumble aloud about the things that are stressing them out, even if they normally wouldn't discuss something so personal. Someone will have to shake them awake, otherwise the nap can last many hours.
This Rumor does not require a fight to deal with. Within a week of the cafe's opening, it is mysteriously and suddenly closed for repairs. The old woman can still be spotted around the neighborhood and says that a pipe broke in the cafe kitchen! How weird! Well... At least now she can reopen without that embarrassing advertisement...

【FAQ】
Re: 【FAQ】
And if someone were to check the leylines, where is the magic most strongest in this world, specifically?
Also do the shrines ping magic at all, and if yes, do specific shrines ping any specific types of magic?
no subject
Spirit magic involves forming a contract with a spirit and acting as their medium. Magic in this world is always connected to spirits in some way. If not contracting a spirit, the use of magical items (with a spirit's blessing) is a common substitute. The magic of other worldly characters still works and the locals are fascinated by it.
2. For leylines; Magic seems to have flooded the city due to the abundance of spirits. Spirits have a magic aura and it may be possible to pinpoint which ones have the most faith based on that aura. Shrines also emit a lot of magical energy. The stronger shrines are of Love, of Destruction, of Spacetime, and of Curiosity.
The shrine of Love emits the most power. If Rin is sensitive to different auras/magical signatures, she may notice that there are many magical signatures coming from that shrine. The other shrines have a singular source.
3. Depending on Rin's sensitivity, she may notice that the shrines have affinity not for an element of magic, but for the use of magic. For example, magic used with the intention to help (most of the lesser shrines have this,) feels similar to the magic coming from the Shrine of Love. Magic used to hurt or destroy feels similar to the of Destruction, magic used for training/experimenting to the of Curiosity. When new characters arrive, the Spacetime Shrine's magic can be felt briefly.

【NPC】 Shrine to Love
Of course, you're here for your own reasons. Whether it's a prayer or request, or just a visit, your journey will be the same. There is an alleyway lined with colourful shops, sloped upward and into a mountain. Eventually, the shops give away to a vibrant forest and stone steps that seem to go on forever. At the top, after about a half hour's trek, is not exactly a shrine... It's a huge castle, which overlooks the land beyond the City of Star Sand.
This prompt is to mingle with those who live here! You may request a specific kind of thread, or wildcard it! The Kami of Love and/or her extended helpers will respond!
no subject
When she reaches the castle, she can't help but clear her throat, speaking aloud, calm and clearly:]
Excuse me! This is where the Kami of Love resides, isn't it?
[She pours emotions into her voice: curiosity, politeness, an inquiry for things that cann't be seen on her face.]

...Okay that last part was a bit of a stretch. But when the locals told him about a shrine on top of a nearby mountain, he dared to hope there might be some kind of link to his home there - after all, it sounded an awful lot like the Hakuba shrine, stairs and all.
What they failed to mention was the castle sitting up on top, which immediately gave him flashbacks. With no small amount of trepidation (especially after finding his pockets completely empty, save for the pocket knife he always carried), he knocked on the castle's door.]

Atsushi Nakajima | Bungo Stray Dogs
[This can't be real, is a thought that Atsushi has had over and over now. In one moment, he was returning home from a long day of work. But rather than enter his apartment, Atsushi walked into another world. The sunlight alone is startling enough. The addition of the pastel colours, jewels embedded in buildings, and flicker of 'spirits' have only added to his panic.
He would very much like to believe this is a joke. An illusion, maybe? Someone's ability? But as that theory begins to form, Atsushi turns and bumps into someone. He only needed to blink and they were there. It's just like how the locals described his arrival.]
Eh- Sorry! I- Uh... Are you okay? Do you know where you are?
[Because he's not fully equipped to explain.]
Corner Shrine
[At least there is one consistent thing between worlds: That Atsushi will gladly do just about anything asked of him. When he's asked to offer prayers at the nearby shrines, Atsushi decides that is easy enough. It's a very small price to pay for some free food and the promise of a temporary apartment. And being asked to sweep the walkways? That seemed easy enough too. Just how many shrines can there even be in one city?
Well.
Atsushi is cleaning his tenth and still hasn't finished every shrine in this neighborhood. He expected maybe two or three, but ten..? His sigh is more of an annoyed groan as he stares at the current shrine.]
"For internet?" The internet is controlled by the gods here?
... Is that a good idea?
arrival
[Even if he is completely disoriented, Atsushi's first instinct is always to be the one apologizing. He brushes himself off a little and glance around.]
This... doesn't look like a library, which is where I was a second ago, so... no?
[He didn't intentionally enter a book, and it's a much more blatant process than blink-and-you'll-teleport, so that can't be what happened.]

No, it's fine, I'm the one who should be apologizing for not watching where I'm going as well.
[Rin immediately deflects even as she notices that her surroundings have changed. It's probably some sort of strange magic, but as to what, she isn't completely sure yet. That's something she'll eventually come to know and understand in time, however.
But for now, she has to remain calm, and ever the so elegant Tohsaka.]
I seem to be fine... [She checks herself over again, a double take, just in case.] But unfortunately, I can't say that I'm familiar with my current surroundings. Since you asked that question, I assume it's the same for you as well, right? In that case, perhaps we should work together to find out, hm? Four eyes are better than two, after all!

Fauna/Night Wild | OC
[Fauna's arrival is, most likely, a bit more notable than most other random people. For one, she's already all beaten up, and looks like she might have been crying.
On the other hand, she also appears to have been climbing up some stairs as she appeared here, which means she's expecting there to be a stair under her foot... and then there isn't. And so the new arrival falls flat on her face right in the middle of Level 5.
... She's not moving. Maybe you should help her?]
b. bspacetime
[After hearing about the whole, Space-Time Everything, Fauna decides there's only one thing to do. And she starts marching up the stairs to the Shrine of Spacetime. She does not look happy... Maybe you should follow her?
Of course, if you do, when you get up to the top, you'll simply find a strange armored figure, attacking the everliving hell out of the closed door. She's currently surrounded by giant blue fireballs, which she's hurling one-by-one at the door until it opens.
... It's not going to open, though.]
b
But very few people begin unleashing attacks upon the locked door. Chron stops her own ascent about six stairs from the top, arms crossed over her chest and a displeased expression on her face. She might not like the lazy Kami's door either, but she doesn't agree with hitting it.]
... So? At what point are you going to give up and admit that brute force won't open it?

[While it's not Kasumi's first time in a foreign planet - in a foreign universe, it definitely is her first time being in this situation, where she just finds herself watching someone trip and fall, already completely injured, even.
She's not an expert at mending people herself, as someone who always got hurt and got chastised for it, but that doesn't mean that she's just going to outright ignore someone when she sees them hurt. Although she will admit that she's feeling awkward about it.]
Umm... a-are you alright? Do you need me to grab someone, or something-? Please wake up...

Soma Cruz | Castlevania: Sorrows Arc
[Having paid a visit to Satou in her mountain castle, and (presumably) made housing arrangements there, Soma needed to make other arrangements now. His coat could be re-enchanted easily enough, restoring the properties it had taken on during his trek through Dracula's castle, but he would need more than that and the suit of clothes he had on his back if he was going to be here any length of time. Then there were things like entertainment and communications to think of - a cell phone or the local analogue was basically a necessity, and he wanted to see about finding a violin he could purchase once he could afford it.
And he needed a sword. Apparently peaceful city notwithstanding, he had two years' worth of paranoia and demon hunting under his belt that told him he was going to need a weapon at some point - and he already knew his pocket knife just wasn't going to cut it.
Performing menial labor for new clothes wasn't that bad. He'd mostly grown up at or around the Hakuba shrine, after all, and Mina had roped him into helping with her chores more than once. Which is a nice way of saying he knows his way around a broom, and is making good time clearing the shrine he'd been pointed to for his clothes of leaf debris. More observant folk might notice he's using a jet of conjured water to wash away the specks of paint, as well. Feel free to poke the dhampir.]
[Shrine of Spacetime]
[Floating stairs are no obstacle when you can fly, and even if he were averse to using his bat form here, Soma has plenty of other ways of doing magical parkour. This shrine is his third major stop since arrival; he'd been putting it off until he'd exhausted all the other leads he had. Now that he was here, he could feel the power invested in the shrine... but that was all. He couldn't sense its nature, whether it was awake, dormant, or even 'alive'. It was just... kind of there. What looks like a door might as well be a solid steel wall, as far as he can tell. He's inspecting some of the decorations of the shrine, seeing if he can glean any useful information from them; again, feel free to poke the dhampir.]
shrine of spacetime
[Hillis had inspected them previously, using her vines to feel along the door for any gaps or cracks. She hadn't been able to break it into petals either, which only confirmed that it wasn't a normal door.
She now stands a few stairs away from the top, having to tilt her neck back in order to watch Soma. Her inspection was only a few minutes earlier, actually. When she noticed another person in the area, she had decided to check what methods they would use.
Her golden gaze has shifted to Soma's white hair, but she then forces eye contact. His eyes don't look like those of the Parvenons Family. White hair has no reason to be associated with a bloodline that doesn't exist in this world, so she blinks the remaining suspicion away.]
I wonder where it leads to.

Hillis Inoaden (Solitary Lady)
[When she opened her eyes, Hillis expected to be in the same place as ever. She would be back in that garden, with those people, set to repeat the cycle of neglect and abuse. It was going to be tiring. The worst part about dying was waking up there.
Yet when she opens her eyes, Hillis does not find herself in the garden. She heard the sounds of that place, but has vanished in the time it took to look up. Instead of being poised to subdue a monster, Hillis has a messy tangle of vines aimed at nothing. Fortunately, no one had gotten in the way of her vines. She slowly turns her head, aware of many shocked eyes having settled on her violent roses, and the vines retreat into her shadow.]
... This isn't the garden. [Obviously not. But where others might panic, Hillis flips her pink hair over her shoulder and shrugs. Without missing a beat, she begins calmly walking forward. No explanation. But also, no questions.]
Good.
(spoiling herself w/ shopping)
[Even after learning that she's in another world, Hillis is calm and uncaring. Anytime she misses home, a memory skitters across her brain like a bug and reminds her to hate it. Here in this town, no one knows of the Inoaden family. No one mistreats her. In fact, the people are suspiciously kind.
Well.
Hillis is used to her happiness being out of reach. If she can seize it for a moment, then she will. So ever since learning about the suncatchers and the locals' willingness to give free gifts, Hillis has been on a freebie rampage. She currently stands in line for a free snack booth. There is a rule to only take three snacks, but the list is of fifty or-so types of drinks and donuts.
Without hesitating, she speaks up to the person next to her.]
Which flavors are worth my time? I've never even heard of 'guava.'
(shrine offerings)
[The locals told her to do chores in exchange for her freebies. The old Hillis would have rolled over and cried about how she couldn't possibly do enough chores to deserve her gifts. She would have cried about the fresh new dresses she obtained today. The emotional weight of her new shoes would have frozen her in place.
But those days are over. Hillis has no reason to grovel at these peoples' feet. If they say one or two shrines is enough, then Hillis will only put in the fair effort. They haven't abused her for her lifetime, but she's not bending over backwards for strangers either. She's even decided that she'll be selective and only honor the shrines that benefit her.
Hillis stops at one of the shrines. There is a sign nearby that describes the Kami who resides within. "The Kami of Forgiveness," it says. People pray here for forgiveness.
She stares at the sign silently. It doesn't benefit her. It has never benefitted her. She cannot look away from it entirely. Then, with a sigh, stretches out her hand. Vines and roses snack down her arm, sending rose petal confetti in all directions. The scent is strong and sweet. The flowers that begin to grow around the sign have no roots, but bloom flawlessly. The vines have thick thorns.]
... You're going to get walked all over, you know. You need to grow some thorns before you die, too.
spoiling
[It's not really a common flavor back home, and it's not one that she's tried, either. Although now she's curious... but that isn't what was asked of her, was it?]
If we're going for the best, staple, amazing flavors, it's gotta be strawberry!

kate / shadows house
arrival;
[Blink once and you -- well, no, she's almost impossible to miss, given her strange appearance. Sure, her clothing is rather regal, but everything else about her isn't.
She's a shadowy wisp of a person (quite literally!) with no facial features to speak of. Although she definitely is more physical than a ghost. But she's also quite small, too; looking no older than ten, maybe eleven.
But how she also stands out is the amount of soot that seems to come out from the tip of her head, hissing as she paces around, impatient.]
I do hope Emilico will be alright...
[She muses to herself, quiet.
She's probably fine, right?]
new arrival freebies;
[Even with this appearance, while some may think otherwise, Kate does need to do the basic necessities. But she finds herself drawn to all of the buildings; this is definitely something that she's never seen before.
Which is why people may find her looking through all the shops, although it's rather difficult to tell due to her lack of expression how she's feeling while actually here.]

But on this day, her attention is drawn to one of the other shoppers. Right away, she notices how Kate seems to be made of soot. It's strange, even in the city of Star Sand. And it bothers Chron; She doesn't like seeing children being pushed around by fate. Though she can't say for sure that Kate isn't a local spirit, her gut (and this particular shop,) make her worry that might not be the case.
Unfortunately, Chron isn't a social butterfly like her mother. She doesn't know how to handle normal kids. She only knows how to clumsily care about people. Which may become apparent in the way her words stumble in a greeting;]
Hey, um. Finding what you need..?

The showingly-clad demoness, Pidonus Marasia, was in overall a rather awkward spot, all things considered.
Being quickly connected to a helpful local spirit was good. Also, frankly, this world overall looked like it sucked less than her homeworld, objectively?
But then there was the part where something was missing. Something in her metaphorical heart. A certain, well, certainty. As long as she had existed, she had been just a servant of evil. Follow the queen's orders, charm and seduce people towards her queen's ends, and enjoy every second of it. But the instant she was here, that was all gone. And in its place was a hell of a lot of doubt.
Didn't help that she'd lost most of her stuff. She looked at a gloved hand - there was a ring under it, which held a link to a magical space. One that was now entirely empty, until she filled it again. If she did. That was a good question.
Pidonus wasn't sure what she wanted, so at first, she was just kind of leaning against a wall, looking around wistfully. Trying to figure out what her purpose even was without her original context.
Maybe not having one was the point?
[Shrine Cleaning]
There were a variety of services for those brought here, at least. And, to start at least, the fee was pretty simple: Work on cleaning a shrine, get a thing or two.
There was, of course, one little problem with this. Namely, it was honestly really boring work, and her attention span was flighty right now.
When she'd realized her powers still worked, though, she'd decided to try something that, in hindsight, was a very stupid kind of clever.
She'd used a magical suggestion on herself that she would happily clean the shrine until either the task was well and truly done, or she was interrupted by someone or something.
That was four hours ago. She'd moved the goalposts on calling it done six times in her head, lost all track of time, and was now using fine brushes to clean some old mud stains on the base of a pedestal - carefully, so as not to damage the stone underneath.
All in an outfit that was not precisely suited to the job. At least her shapeshifting would let her fix the tears and stains there.
Still, she could do with the interruption.
Shrine Cleaning
When she sees a girl cleaning carefully, Hillis is puzzled. She's certain that she saw this girl at another shrine hours ago, didn't she..? Why is she still at it? Surely there isn't a favor that requires hours of cleaning as payment.
Curious, she stops with arms crossed over her chest. "... Are you bad at cleaning, or overly motivated?"

[Kokoro is a very dignified girl who most definitely did not nearly fall on her face when she came here. Okay, so she did. But now she's on a mission! You can find her scouring the top level, looking in any alleyway or shrine for anything that looks suspicious. Which... there doesn't seem to be anything.]
Come on, there must be some sign of the fell presence that brought us in...
[level 2]
[Kokoro has spent entirely too long searching the city for signs of an alien and/or demon and/or vampire plot. But, she must concede, there doesn't appear to be one, and she and a bunch of other people simply got sent to another world and have to make do until they can get back.
So she'll just be wandering the weird urban fantasy streets, checking out their shops and sights, with an awkward look on her face. If she spots you, she'll flag you down.]
My apologies. Are you newly stolen from your home as well?
Nakajima Atsushi | Bungou to Alchemist
[There are probably all kinds of valid responses to finding yourself in a new world with no idea how to return home, but Atsushi's is: check out the library.
It's an opportunity, isn't it? To read all kinds of books that haven't been written at home. Which is why he emerges from the library carrying a stack of books tall enough to partially block his view.
It would be a shame if someone were to suddenly pop into existence in front of him... though, honestly, he'll probably walk into somebody regardless and drop his books all over the ground.]
Sorry, sorry- Excuse me-
[B]
[There's nothing quite like a hot cup of tea to soothe your worries. Which is why you can find Atsushi snoozing away at the cafe. And, of course, talking in his sleep.]
I wonder if my other self knows what's going on... I wish he'd talk to me...
[Huh.]
[C]
[wildcard me!]

Sir, if you are that deprived of sleep, it would be safer to return to your home, would it not?
