【MINGLE】 March Mingle
March Mingle
.
march mingle
With the arrival of March comes a slow spike in temperatures. The snow that previously lined walkways and clung to treetops is beginning to melt, resulting in slow trickles of water through the city and a consistent sound of running water. The large amounts of water run off into streams and rivers on the first level, which then pour off the sides of the stacked city as controlled waterfalls. Accompanying the melted snow water is a huge bloom of flowers... and of course, as most things are in Starsand City, the flowers aren't entirely a natural occurrence.
March marks the start of flower season in the city. From the start of March until end of April, most stores will be including a small package of one to five magical flower seeds with all purchases. The seeds act a lot like Starling in that they can give spirits a boost of magic. While most magic in the city relies on the spirits to grow, these seeds seem to be a rare exception: Anyone is able to grow them, regardless of magical experience, so long as they desire it. Growing flowers around the city is almost an expectation. Shops will begin putting out flower pots and boxes for people to grow flowers in. You can also 'buy' various gardening supplies, including How-To books, in order to start your own gardens outside your residence. And for those suffering from wanderlust, there is always the option of taking a trip to the third level to see the freshly blooming flower fields.
The city atmosphere is peaceful. Fallen Stars may notice that there is less emphasis on treating them as heroes and more focus on treating them as regular civilians. They'll begin to get job offers and civilians will express more interest in their natural talents... After all. It's been almost a year since they appeared. Maybe they're just stuck here.
(A) NEW ARRIVALS / A BAD TIME
New Arrivals can happen as they always have: With a blink, you wake up in a pastel coloured city. Snow melts along the street and gems accent the buildings, while the civilians regard your sudden arrival with mild surprise. They'll be quick to approach and offer you access to things like free food, shelter, and an explanation. They usually insist that you visit the Shrine of Love or Shrine of Spacetime for further information, but don't press uncomfortably.
Or... It can happen another way. This can even happen to Fallen Stars who have already arrived in the city. Instead of blinking and arriving in the beautiful city of Starsand, you blink and find yourself standing at one end of a long, white, and sterile corridor. There are doors made of thick metal on either wall and a larger, red door at the end of the hallway. The lights overhead cast an artificial and sickly light to the floor and occasionally flicker, causing the entire corridor to plunge into darkness. Sometimes when the lights turn back on, the door at the end of the hallway will have changed colours or design.
This prompt is optional, and exploring the corridor will act as a mod directed mini'investigation. Characters can visit the corridor a maximum of two times: Once alone and once with CR. Exploration groups can be no more than 3 characters. More Details here.
Once corridor exploration is complete, new characters will arrive in the city as normal.
(B) GROWING FLOWERS
... Well, that was weird! Luckily, no one needs to linger on that weird vision. You have things to do. Like growing flowers!
The process of growing flowers is relatively simple: Anyone can do it. Take one of the magical seeds you've received and cup it in your hands. After whispering your sincere feelings to the seed, it will begin to sprout. Place the seed in some soil and that's it! Throughout the month, that flower will continue to bloom, so long as the feelings whispered to it remain true. Flowers imbued with happiness will bloom faster if you're in a good mood and flowers imbued with sadness with bloom faster if you're upset. No flower will ever reverse its blooming or die: They'll simply be slower than the rest, until your feelings come into alignment again.
A common practice in the city is to hold flower tea parties; Everyone plants a few happiness flowers, then spends the afternoon having a lovely time together over tea and desserts. Most cafes will happily lend out their spaces for private parties. Otherwise, there are public afternoon tea events being held all around the city where the only price is planting some flowers.
And of course, blooming flowers this way is very good for spirits. They will be glowing especially brightly when they visit the gardens. You may even hear them humming little notes from time to time! And when they're not being sweet and innocent, they're up to their mischievous ways... Spirits will follow people who have unplanted seeds, causing minor mischief until they stop and bloom the flowers. Mischief may include a personal rain cloud, a tripping curse, lots of puddles to step in, hiccups... Small things that are more annoying than dangerous.
(C) VISITING THE FLOWER FIELDS
On the third floor, there is a tiny village that exists almost separate from the main city. And they love flowers. Anyone who investigates where these magical seeds came from will learn that they're from a rural village called Flower Field Town on the third floor. They call themselves a separate village, because they can exist separate from the main city using spirit magic. Almost everyone here has a spirit contract and the flower growing magic originated here.
Visits to the third floor are highly encouraged this month. The populate is barely over 200 people, but they all live in perfect harmony with the spirits. They claim that this is the ideal way to live in the new world of spirits and magic. Technology here is entirely reliant on spirits and all needs are being met through magic. Simply opening a oven can produce a whole meal, putting clothes on the drying line will instantly clean them, etc. etc. When visiting, it's possible to rent a cottage and field to give this way of life a try... But there is a catch. At least one person staying in the cottage must have a spirit pact. If not, then the magic to make food and power the building won't work. You'll have to survive the old fashioned way!
(D) BURY YOUR HEART | cw: themes of depression
There is another use for the seeds, but it's one that is not as widely spoken about. It's something you might learn of through an old fairytale in the library or gossip on the streets. It's a little thing called Heart Burial.
"During the first Flower Blooming, the people of the world were bitter, scared, and angry. The reveal of magic had them questioning their lives and the generations of lives before them. People felt immense guilt for their long history of ignoring the spirits, who helped them in secret, and they had no way to relieve it.
And so, a kami born from human failings created the magic seeds that we know today. They wanted to give humans a chance to repay the spirits with the magic from their own hearts. But they also wanted to alleviate the guilt and shame that could not be magicked away. They imbued the seeds with an extra power: If you whisper your shameful feelings to the seed before you plant it and then visit every day to repent, the magic will slowly drain that feeling from your heart. This way, people could let go of their ugliness and be reborn like spring."
Heart Burial is not something encouraged anymore. If it's brought up, then the older generation will insist that it's a terrible idea and you should find other ways to make up for your sins. But for the younger members of the population, Heart Burial is still popular. You may catch teens trying to burying unrequited love, grudges, or embarrassing memories in their gardens. And they're talking an awful lot about it this year, to the point that the adults are beginning to worry.
(D) FLORAL CHAOS
Part of having a seasonal event where the city is covered with flowers is... having a city covered in flowers. Unfortunately, not everyone in the city understands that the roots under flowers can cause them to suffocate and die if they're too close together. So while growing flowers is all well and good, there is an additional task of carefully digging up flowers and transplanting them to safer places. That's where The Flower Rescue Squad! comes in. They're a very passionate bunch. If you're recruited then you'll get a special purple armband with a flower embroidered into it. The spirits will pick a flower that reminds them of you, so everyone gets something special!
Volunteers will be taught how to recognize a flower that is in danger and how to careful transfer it to a pot, then asked to bring pots to the other city levels for replanting. The first floor is the one most in need of flowers; The civilians there will begrudgingly accept the offer and almost everyone has a planter box or two ready for flowers. Though the first floor residents resist most magic, they are very passionate about taking care of the spirit flowers.
A flower in danger needs to be moved quickly, because it isn't just a danger to itself. The sick flowers are filled with magic, after all. They begin to glow and spread minor curses to those who inhale their aroma. If you aren't working with a mask, then you might feel side effects. And if you aren't aware of the danger then... Oops.
It's a magical effects prompt!
Affected flowers will morph into a specific type and give specific effects. It's possible to research the effects beforehand, but they change every year. Information will not be easy to obtain until the 10th of the month. Until then, not even the most seasoned Flower Rescue Squad! members know what to expect. The effects last no more than two hours. And for once, spirits can actually cure these effects!
- Peonies: The scent of these flowers will leave someone feeling energized. They may be more ambitious and fearless than usual... and also, a bit reckless.
- Roses: The scent of a rose will cause your hair to change to the colour of the rose you were dealing with. Animal ears and tails are also unfortunate side effects of this scent.
- Lilies: The scent of a lily causes someone to become incredibly clumsy. You'll need a lot of help just getting around.
- Carnations: These flowers will cause your emotions to be written on your face in text form. They can appear anywhere from your cheek to your forehead.
- Daffodils: The scent of a daffodil will allow someone to temporarily see the spirit realm. This realm exists alongside the regular and it filled with a blinding number of spirits. Their feelings may bleed into your own. Right now, most spirits are very happy. Headaches and nauseas are common.
- Iris: The scent of an iris will cause you to spew compliments to anyone you meet. Repeating compliments is fine. So is lying.
- Poppy: The scent of a poppy flower will cause intense drowsiness, paired with miserable insomnia.

What an odd and familiar place this is. Maybe that's why Stella isn't afraid - not yet. The sterile halls reminded her too much of Overbrook, her time with Jackie and Daria. The sadness in those places, what she did to improve it. Not even the flickering lights got her down much.

Uh, yeah, I agree. Normally I'd just use a plant glyph, but I'm glad this way I can help out the spirits, too.

[Holding the teacup in her hands primly, Aimee tries to stay frozen in place, sitting so stiffly her shoulders are starting to hurt. She looks as though she might cry, her smile wobbling as she lifts the cup to her lips to take a sip.
She blinks back tears.]

[ Flower planting's not really something she's done before. It's far too passive, something others did for her. Onee-san for sure...
For that part, Karin might've gone ahead and planted a flower at one of the tea parties. Again, it's not really her thing, but on the other hand... free refreshments. Which is why she can be found at one either glancing at a flower, passively watching it grow, or slouching in a seat and enjoying some tea.
You know, like a proper fuckin' lady. ]
ii. flower fields forever
[ While she wasn't necessarily big on the rural way of living, she could appreciate smaller villages, a closer knit community than that of a much, much larger city. She'd decided to take the opportunity to take the locals up on an offer to rent a cottage again. The need to want to head home vs the thought of sticking around longer was starting to bug her, and taking in these moments of peace were the best she could do at the moment.
Right now, she could be found laying in one of the fields, dozing. It had gotten peaceful, and she figured taking a nap amongst the flowers couldn't be all that bad.
Granted... she seems to always have her guard up, and her bokken is right next to her. Proceed with caution? ]
iii. floral chaos
Yo. Good work, keep it up.
[ You might have overheard this a couple times, with Karin just out taking a walk. She came across an iris that had been planted at one of those parties, and now she's unable to keep herself from just, repeatedly telling everyone that they're doing a great job.
Her compliments aren't particularly specific for the locals, but even as annoyed as she looks, she might be willing to change her tune for one of the Fallen Stars...? ]

Stella | Spiritfarer
[A garden is a vessel of our love, a mirror we hold to ourselves. That's what Stella's aunt Summer taught her. Turns out, that holds true anywhere.
Now that she's more accustomed to the city, Stella's been making bigger appearances throughout it, planting her own flowers but also help others with their own. Like something of a traveling bard, she skirts from one flower party to the next, her Everlight shifted into its comfortable guitar shape.
And, wherever she goes, Stella plays.
It actually seems to have a positive effect on the plants growth. Who knew? She did.]

She just had to go for the Daffodils.]
Ow! I- Yes, I know! I see you! I see all of you!
[She's... alone, one hand clutching her head, obviously trying to smile through a headache. The other hand clutches the daffodil in a planter.]

Akutagawa Ryunosuke | Bungo Stray Dogs
He's feeling a bit better now. Enough to at least try being an active member of society again, if a slightly sluggish one. He looks a bit exhausted despite himself. ]
I. Flower Planting
[ The idea of these flowers seems interesting to him. He's made a conscious effort to participate in this- even if he didn't particularly need to try that hard. He went out of his way to get a few planter boxes and soil, and was now positioned in front of one of them just...
Quietly staring. He's trying to decide how much room to give to each of the seeds. He's never grown flowers before, let alone magic flowers. ]
I wonder if stronger feelings makes the plant grow larger than average...
[ Yeah he doesn't know how flowers work ]
II. Floral Chaos
[ Akutagawa, being outside more often in an effort to track down a more permanent solution for his health issues has been... subjected to quite a few distressed flowers without realizing it. His problem may well not be apparent at first- as he's not been feeling well lately anyway- but he's sitting, head down at one of the tables outside.
He came a little too close to a glowing daffodil, wondering what the problem was, and well... recieved a problem in kind. The nausea from the influx of spirit emotions has more or less immobilized him. If approached though, he will lift his head just a little to look at them ]
... Did you need something?
II
[Yuuto isn't sure what the problem is, but he couldn't walk by after seeing his boyfriend facedown at a table. He sets two cups of tea on the table with a plastic container of painkillers, then reaches out to bring the opposite chair around to sit next to Akutagawa. All normal actions taken without a second thought at this point in their relationship.
... Also Yuuto's hair is dark red, practically black, and he has cat ears and a tail. Akutagawa isn't the only one cursed by a flower today. Yuuto had been transplanting dark roses and now his hair matches.]

Hello! Good morning everyone, it's nice to meet you all again!
So, hey, hey, I have a question. I had a really, really funny dream lately. Wound up with me burning my hands quite a bit! Does this kind of thing happen a lot around here?
ii. cottagecore
[ The cottages were more her speed anyway. B.B.'s started to fit in a bit more down there, continuing on wearing her typical red hood and cape as she happily explores the level! Included in this may or may not be her just searching through the cottages. Just double checking what's in and out of the cottages! She's the worst. Bonnie's mostly glancing around to see if there's something worthwhile around!
On the flip side, if she catches someone actually using the spirits well, she looks around in awe. ]
Wow! Is that what spirits are up to down here? Hey, how do I get one? [ Speaking like she's trying to order something useful? ]
iii. conceal
[ The concept of burying your heart is ridiculous. There's no actual way that anything like that could happen. Shameful feelings? Repenting? Ridiculous.
Still...
She hates that she's even thinking about it. Hearing about it through the grapevine made her curious, but she didn't put any credence into it.
Despite that, Bonnie could be seen multiple days in a row to check on a seed that had been planted towards a tree. Singing to it a little, making sure it's well fed... at the very least, she wouldn't be cruel to a plant! Even if it's heard things that no one else absolutely should. ]

Kanade Yoisaki | Project Sekai
[Magic flowers. Kanade's been in this world long enough now that she kind of expected magic flowers to factor into the change of seasons once spring rolls around. And it's rather nice, really. For someone like her, who can barely take care of herself, the idea that she only needs to tell a seed her sincere feelings for it to grow is a huge relief. She wants to be able to make things grow. She wants to be reminded of her mother, who tended all the flowers around their house with such care that it was like they lived three flower lifetimes.
... But she also wanted to put effort into this. She wanted to be able to develop skills outside of music, to better help others in more than one way. So on a warm, only slightly breezy day, Kanade can be found at the Spacetime Shrine, digging into one of the flower beds there. Beside here is a mix of packets of magical seeds and mundane seeds, along with a few flower starters and plenty of bottled water.
Kanade looks... a bit rough, though not worryingly so. She's since discarded her usual track jacket, leaving her in a thin, plain black t-shirt. There's dirt streaked all up and down her arms and caked in patches on her shirt, with some even smudged on her cheek and forehead. For such a mild day, she's sweating quite a bit with exertion as well, and looks to be taking frequent breaks to chug one of the water bottles at her side. But even with how she's almost wheezing from the effort of all this physical exertion, there's a happy light in her eye when it comes to handling the flowers and seeds. She holds them as if they were something precious, something fragile, and places them in the dirt of the flower bed with the utmost gentleness before brushing more dirt over them.
All while she works, she hums. Some tunes are songs the others have heard her or Mafuyu play, others are just random tunes. But as she hums, the spirits gather around her, their indisctinct humming eventually falling in to match Kanade's. She doesn't seem to notice them as she works, but that's fine; they just float about like little fireflies, pleased with the music and the care put into the slowly growing garden.]
[B; Floral Chaos]
[... The only downside to her work at the shrine, aside from an ungodly amount of soreness in every corner of her body the day after each excursion to the shrine, is that some people seemed to have caught on to Kanade's work with the flowers. This means she's very quickly roped into the Flower Rescue Squad, and well... since her luck with the spirits seemed to have held up, her luck had to fail in other areas. She's been having terrible luck with these flowers in particular, and it isn't long until the magical aroma of one of the roses in her hand hits her, leaving her head incredibly itchy until she reaches up and-]
... Ah.
[... And just gives a resigned sigh. Atop her head are a pair of rounded, fluffy ears. At first glance, they look like something belonging to a polar bear, due to the shape and the white fur. But there are dark spots on the ears... spots that match the furred pattern on the long, thick-furred catlike tail now sprouting out behind her. They aren't bear ears, no - they're the ears and tail of a snow leopard, and instead of looking startled, Kanade's shoulders merely slump.]
I guess I should have expected this.... this always happens...
[She's not angry or annoyed. She just... sounds defeated.]
[C; A New Pact (closed to Yuuto and Mafuyu)]
[... So this is happening. For real. Kanade won't lie - a part of her is nervous. Yuuto and Sam both brought up the possibility that this could be dangerous, and while that's not enough for her to waver - because Kanade never put any aspect of herself above others - there's definitely a spring of anxiousness coiling in her chest. But she just has to remember how much this is going to help Yuuto, and be reassured that Mafuyu is there to witness it, and that spring eases just a little. Nothing bad will happen to any of them with the three of them looking out for each other, right...?
... Right.
So she's back at the Spacetime Shrine, her best friend at her side and her soon to be kami before her. She fidgets nervously, picking at a few fraying threads on her jacket. It's not often that she feels self-conscious, but it's definitely starting to creep up now.]
Um... should I have dressed formally for this...?
[This is something really important, right? Is it an insult to Yuuto to do this while in her normal clothes??? Is she already starting things off on the wrong foot???]
[D; Wildcard]
[Wanna throw something at Kanade that doesn't fit into one of these prompts? Throw it here! Feel free to hash out something with me first on Discord or over at

So seeing Kanade dressed in a fraying jacket is somewhat amusing. The sight of her looking so normal and so much like his dear friend is reassuring too. For all of the outside stress attached to this contract, from the politics to his Distortion, the sight of Kanade reminds him of what's important: It's a promise with his friend to help each other.
That's the most important part.]
Huh? [He's startled out of his thoughts. Yuuto is always dressed in a formal manner and briefly wonders if he's overdressed,] Oh. No, you're fine. As long as you're comfortable, Kanade-san?
[He looks to Mafuyu, too, and bows his head in greeting.] Thank you both very much for coming.

Rui Kamishiro | Project Sekai
[Rui is happy for the warmer weather, especially because that means that the flowers are starting to grow. While he has a happiness flower waiting for him at home, he has planted a couple at the public tea event he's at now.]
I really love how much this city appriciates flowers, don't you?
II. The Flower Fields Pt 1
[He doesn't want to spend too much time here, but after hearing about it, he and Kaminyari decide to spend a few days in the village.]
It's really nice being away from the city. Come to think of it. I've never spent much time away from cities before. It's pretty quiet isn't it?
III. The Flower Fields Pt 2
[Actually, a place surrounded by flowers, and where everyone has a spirit contract might just be the perfect place to try out his new show. Which is why he's in the middle of the street performing a play about a lost alchemist being saved by spirit and the alchemist giving her a body. Of course, Kaminyari was the spirit star! And was showing off both in and out of her robot shrine.]
IV. Floral Rescue Squad
[As soon as Rui learned about the Floral Rescue Squad, he knew he had to join it. So now he's walking around with a purple armband with a pink zinnia embrodered on it, digging up struggling flowers.]
Ah, don't worry, little one. I'll get you to a nice home. Then you can make everyone smile with your beauty.
V. Floral Chaos
[Rui had been doing his job replanting flowers, but he got hit with a curse. So now he's wandering around with pink hair as well as cat ears and tail, occassionally stopping to examine his new additions.]
It's a shame that it wasn't anything more interesting.
VI. Shrine Update
[With the warmer weather, Rui can actually start working with the garage door open. He leaves it open as he works on Kaminyari's updated shrine. Now that she's more or less decided on a visual for herself, it is his job to make a proper robot that suits her. The bakeneko looking spirit is standing on his desk making suggestions. Rui more or less brushes them off, in part because he notices someone walking by his obnoxiously rainbow house.]
Nice day, isn't it? And with all the flowers blooming its hard not to be happy~

taiga aisaka
[ You would think that, after the first time she dealt with this, Taiga would have been more careful. Maybe wear a mask, or being more careful of which flowers she tries to transplant. It's blatantly obvious that she did not, and will not learn her lesson, as she's got cute little tiger ears and a cute little tiger tail while she continues her day.
If she sees someone she's familiar with, she'll desperately try to avoid eye contact, which only makes her look even more conspicuous. ]
b. uhhhhhh
[ look, there isn't a b. there is only me, bee! give me a poke and we can find some shenanigans to pull. everyone loves shenanigans. ]

[The ears and tail are super cute! But Aimee is too polite to mention them, and she tries not to stare, so instead she’s staring at the sky.]

WILDCARD?!
Kagami | OC
Hello! 🌸✨✨
My name is Kagami and it’s super nice to meet everyone. 😊 I’ve heard that an adorable village on the third floor and I want to see it. I adore flowers!
But this spirit contract thing interests me too. Has anyone made a spirit contract here? How did it go? Was it difficult? Would you do so again?
I’m considering making one~ I hope I can be friends with everyone here.
bury your heart
[Kagami wants to laugh. The whole concept of heart burial is so ridiculous to him that he doesn’t know how else to react. It leaves him in an even worse mood than he was in, but he doesn’t tear his eyes away when he sees someone performing the ritual. He’s lost in his own thoughts, whispering to himself in disgust.]
Humans are truly stupid and weak. There’s no way to repent, especially not something this convenient…
You should just give up.
floral chaos
[Kagami has been affected by roses, leaving him with fluffy mouse ears and a tail. He looks agitated as he goes out, frequently tugging on the ears and grumbling.]
How do I get these stupid things off?! This is bullshit!
starnet; un: Yuki
It was pretty simple, although I suppose my current contract feels a bit coincidental. But as for your last question...
I don't know if I'd do it a second time.

Mochizuki Honami | Project Sekai [Open]
[Honami still had a lot to process by the time she'd gotten out of her daze.
She could gather this much -- this was not the band's SEKAI; even double checked her phone to make sure she hadn't been playing Untitled in her sleep. (That would have been especially careless of her...) This was also very removed from Scramble Crossing, much less anywhere back home. This village, its people -- they were at least welcoming to her, and it was a bit easier to take in where she was after she had her questions answered, but... she was very lost, all the same.
If nothing else, she had a roof over her head and a starting point. It's with this in mind that she sets off to see more; maybe she'd even find familiar faces.]
II. Floral Chaos
[Of course, she can't help but wander here and there, get things to help her settle into her new place. This becomes more prominent after she stops by the Spacetime Temple; 'buying' things in Starsand was still rather novel to her, so having something just given to her on the spot along with the seeds feels a bit... ah, unfair. She should be giving back a little, at least, for the trouble.
What should have been a trip to give herself a garden away from her home garden, though, quickly turned into her bringing her shopping back before volunteering for the Flower Rescue Squad. Edelweiss armband fastened (she quietly appreciates the gesture of such flowers being used for her, smiling at the spirits that gave it), she sets off to work. As luck would have it, too, her first flowers to move down to the first floor just happen to be roses.
Unfortunately, being a newcomer, she wandered straight into the whole thing without a mask. It takes her a bit after the scent wafts into her nose for her to realize--'oh.
Those are panda ears and a tail she's feeling.' Her hair also turns a rather bright white to match with the black fur now sticking out of her head.]
O--Oh, dear...! Did I take it out too quickly...? [As much as a certain cheery idol helped her fight back against her bad luck, she really hopes this wasn't her great curse for the year talking...]
i
That's certainly a familiar face, and one that she hasn't seen in a while, enough for Mafuyu herself to gasp slightly in surprise and immediately throw on her usual act on her face like it's a veil. ]
Mochizuki-san...? Did you just arrive?
