【FEBRUARY MINGLE】

Star Sand City
So Fantasy Reclaimed Reality,
Welcome to the world that fantasy took back.

According to the locals, you are not the first stranger from another world to be dragged to this one. This is a world that, up until five years ago, did not know magic. Fantasy did not expand beyond its designated shelves of the library; There were no gods or spirits, only science and reason.

But five years ago, the secret was blown. Magical 'spirits' exist in this world. You may have seen them as flickers of light; Souls without a body. They were once invisible and powerless, existing silently alongside the rest of the living. But with enough faith from the living, spirits can manifest. They can even have the magic powers that others believe them to have.

Nowadays, spirits and magic are impossible to ignore. Magic has transformed the architecture, average people are learning spirit magic, and technology is being upgraded with this new power. Electricity is going out of favor; Spirits now power homes in exchange for shrine offerings and prayers. Though traces of the old era still exist, they are slowly being replaced by magic. Every city is changing at a different pace depending on how the citizens reacted to the news of spirits.

But you're not here for a lore drop, are you? You just got here.

New arrivals have become commonplace in the City of Star Sand. In fact, the city is named for this phenomena; People from other worlds ("stars") appear so frequently that it's like a beach of sand. Even those who normally travel between worlds have found it impossible to leave the pull of the Star Sand once they get here. Some people have even come from other time periods. (the date here is 2025.) No other city is reporting this unique problem for some reason.

Roleplay-wise; This is a semi-private sandbox for a modern-fantasy blended setting. Characters can either be whisked away from their homes or wake up as AUed residents. While there will be a lot of background lore and a mystery to dig your teeth into, it's all optional. First and foremost, the sandbox is meant to be played in. The City of Star Sand is a very flexible place to stretch your imagination. Some parts of the city may just seem like normal Tokyo, while others might feel like a DnD campaign. The world will gradually expand as the sandbox takes off as well, so you'll be able to submit your own cities with unique cultures.

The Mingle is meant for dipping your toes into the setting! You're more than welcome to add journal entries with your own prompts~.

Prompt Ideas
A Snowy Surprise
On February 1st, snow falls. The flakes come down with deceptive grace, like a harmless flurry. One that manages to build into a decent blanket of snow by the end of the night. The locals don't seem too alarmed. If prompted, they'll explain that snow was uncommon in the city before spirits came. Everyone is excited to have some snow, even if they wish it would have come during Christmas. Apparently the Snow Kami was too weak to create snowfall earlier.

The snow will last throughout the month of February. It's not particularly threatening either. There is more snow on the top level than down on the first. The Snow Kami is being mindful of the first level's desperate cling to normalcy, so isn't playing with their weather. It is possible to create snowmen or have snowball fights on the other levels. Things can get a bit slippery if you aren't careful, but the spirits will help catch those who fall.

Most peculiar about the snow is how it is always falling in small flurries. It never stops. The sun rarely goes away either and the sky is typically clear. This snow is obviously the work of magic, not of the non-existent clouds overhead. Yet, no one will be able to tell you where the Snow Kami is. Apparently she is quite shy and tries to blend in with the season. They say that if you can catch her before the snow melts, your misfortunes will also melt away for the year.

Rumor: The Red String of Fate
There are many romantic rumors passing through ears and mouths this month. Among them is the popular notion of a "Red String of Fate." According to this rumor:

"There are red strings that tie us to one another. Bonds that we may not normally notice, if not for the existence of that string... And, well! I've heard that those bonds will be visible this month! Isn't that amazing?"

What the rumor doesn't say is that these 'red strings' are actually 'red ribbons.' And they aren't tied to your pinky fingers... They're tied to your ankle. Randomly during the day, you might look down and see a red ribbon tied around your ankle. It connects to someone else's foot and the more you two move apart, the more you'll feel the tug of the ribbon trying to force you back together. It'll get shorter and shorter until you can't ignore it anymore.

The only way to break the ribbon is to talk to your partner and discover what you have in common with them. After that, the ribbon will fly away to ensnare another pair. If you can't find anything in common with your partner, the ribbon will continue to tighten until you're joined like a three-legged race. You'll need to pray for help at a shrine to have the ribbon removed.

Ribbons can tie people multiple times and to multiple partners. They have spirit magic on them until they are broken. The spirit cannot manifest, but those with a sixth sense might hear a child's voice pleading; "I just wanted to be together."

Winter's Warm Good Bye
The false snow only lasts for the month of February, like a final good bye to winter as the spring season approaches. The people of Starsand really enjoy the snow, so they give thanks throughout February. They also really want to catch the Snow Kami before the snow melts, hoping that they might have her melt their misfortunes away.

To lure her, cafes and restaurants on the upper three floors are giving away free tea and desserts all month long. Apparently the Snow Kami has a sweet tooth and can be lured by a good cup of tea. Characters will be able to stop in for a free drink and treat at just about any establishment. These restaurants are also hiring Fallen Stars to work there for some rare cash.

Cash can be used to buy unnecessary luxuries (usually handmade items,) that cannot be prayed for. You can handwave characters having physical cash and the price of items they might want. Cash in this world looks like konpeitto. No one seems able to explain the exact mineral to you, but it does represent gold.

Rumor: The Path Not Meant To Be Taken
There's never a warning. No magical signature, no cloud in the sky, no whisper or scream. You were on your way like normal, when the snow flurries turned red. Strangely, they don't blanket the entire area either. They mark red paths in the snow, leading you to the bottom floor of the city.

Locals will warn you not to follow the red snow. They tell you that this snow falls every year, without fall, and that it is meant to punish those who have committed grave sins. "You look like a lovely person. Surely that snow isn't for you!" is what they will insist to you.

If you do follow the snow, you will likely find that you aren't the only one on this red path. Many branches of the path join together at the bottom floor, specifically at The Shrine of Destruction. You'll find yourself standing among many others, Fallen Stars and locals alike, who had followed the path. The locals seem to be listless, as if they're in some sort of daydream state. They whisper about the awful things they have done, trying to theorize why they got sent down this red path. Some of the locals even begin to distort into monstrous versions of themselves: Rumors made by their own fear of sin.

Characters can defeat these monsters with physical or magical attacks. Spirits in the area will offer their aid to powerless characters. It is also possible for characters to temporarily become rumors themselves. Defeating a rumor doesn't kill the victim, but it will knock them unconscious. If characters need help, put "Kami Intervention" in the subject line for... well. A Kami's intervention.

No civilians will die, nor will any of them remember the event once they return home.

Curiosity Trapped The Cat
A casual walk around the top level suddenly becomes a desperate attempt to dodge a blizzard. Maybe it's your imagination, but the winds seem to be pushing you towards the Shrine of Curiosity. The door is easily opened, but once characters are inside they will find that the wind is too strong for them to push open the door again. Weird.

Fortunately, the shrine isn't a bad place to be stuck. It is a giant library, with room after room of books and seating options. Coffee cups float around and pour their own drinks, which are (curiously) perfectly suited to those offered a drink. The doors will become easier to open after characters have read a book or two... So it's possible that you may be stuck in this library all day. Maybe it's best to get cozy. There are some lofts on the upper floors that are free to use for the night if it comes to that.

Characters can escape the library without reading if they leave with someone who did read.

It is possible to live longterm in the Shrine of Curiosity if your character really likes books. The lofts are shaped by spirits to suit the needs of the occupants. The books on the shelves change to reflect the wants of the occupants. Each loft has a spirit helper, who only wants to hear a book read aloud for them as they fall asleep at night.

stavros: Kokoro about to use her whip. ([a] ready to go)

[personal profile] stavros 2022-02-01 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
[snow]

[If she knew more about snow, Kokoro might be suspicious of how the snow seems perfect for making snowmen even though it's freshly fallen with more on the way, a sure sign of magic. Instead, you can just find her trudging through the piling-up snow and occasionally tripping and falling over into it.]

...we ought to shovel, should we not.

[red snow]

[The locals had warned her, of course, but that only made Kokoro more determined. Maybe this wasn't for her, but surely the people it did call deserved salvation. And so she ends up following and finds herself looking around as the dazed victims mumble about their misdeeds.]

What is this... Some manner of local spirit exacting vengeance?

[A: shrine of curiosity]
[Hello, new home. You can find Atsushi curled up in a cozy chair with a stack of books next to him, happily reading anything and everything he can get his hands on.

If someone else enters the shrine, he'll cheerfully call out to them.]

Welcome! Are you looking for anything in particular?

[B: red string]
[Looking for the person on the other end of your red ribbon? You'll find a grumpy-looking Atsushi with no glasses and, probably more noticeably, a sword. He's trying to slice the ribbon off, but to no success.]

Ridiculous. Cut already, damn you.

[C: wildcard]

[Hillis had already tried to cut the ribbon with her roses. When she failed the first time, she simply shrugged and accepted it was beyond her ability. Some things were.

So by the time that she finds the other end of the ribbon, she has already reasoned that force won't work. She calmly approaches the grumpier Atsushi, her own expression void of emotion. Except, perhaps, some ever-lingering exhaustion.]

... It is rather stubborn, hm? What a peculiar attachment we've made.

[Hello, 'destined partner' or whatever. Atsushi doesn't look more grumpy when she approaches, so that's something.]

I'm not really interested in meeting people, but I'd like to be able to walk.
thesolitaryrose: ((26))

red snow

[personal profile] thesolitaryrose 2022-02-01 03:10 am (UTC)(link)
It would seem so.

[Hillis' voice is soft. If it is vengeance, then she questions her own desire to interfere. As someone who has been wronged to the point of acting out her revenge, she knows how it feels.

But she also knows that no amount of vengeance can fill the holes in a damaged heart.

A bed of red roses grows at her feet as she contemplates interfering. ]

In that case, are we expected to pick a side? Or act as judges, who observe justice?
thesolitaryrose: ((01))

[personal profile] thesolitaryrose 2022-02-01 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
The feeling is mutual.

[Hillis isn't here to make friends. That is a mistake and she's tired of living for others. Unfortunately, this magic trick is physically forcing her to cross paths with people... how exhausting.]

I have never heard of this magic. Whose fault do you suppose it is?
tigerpoet: inner neutral (☽ rising up straight to the top)

[personal profile] tigerpoet 2022-02-01 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
I've heard of the 'red string of fate' before. There's a similar legend in my world. And it seems like what people believe in usually comes true around here.

[Troublesome... Maybe that's what gives the spirits their power, but it also means annoying things like this.]
stavros: Kokoro with her whip. ([a] introducing)

[personal profile] stavros 2022-02-01 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
Whatever fell spirit enacted this has already declared themselves thus. But even if their consciences are awakened by this, can we truly allow them to come to harm?

Snow

[personal profile] blastiaobsessieanonymous 2022-02-01 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
[Rita Mordio, who happened to be passing by around the time of that comment, is just kind of shivering.]

... Do we have to do that, or can I focus on warming up?

[The single pant leg and thin coat are not making for a good time for weather cold enough for snow to last, it seems. It does appear that the girl is new to this place...]
stavros: Nearly tripping and crying out in shock. ([c] no way)

[personal profile] stavros 2022-02-01 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
Dedication -- [Kokoro drags herself to her feet, nearly slips again, pouts, and starts dusting the snow off of herself.] Dedication to one's task is a virtue. Nobody's going to be able to get around in this.
thesolitaryrose: ((75))

[personal profile] thesolitaryrose 2022-02-01 03:51 am (UTC)(link)
I find it difficult to believe in 'fate,' even in a place like this. [She shakes her head, arms crossed over her chest.] No matter. What does this rumor entail in your home? Perhaps it is similar here.

[Surely that story must come with a way to cut the annoying ribbon.]
thesolitaryrose: ((90))

[personal profile] thesolitaryrose 2022-02-01 03:53 am (UTC)(link)
Fell spirit? Or fell sinners?

[Hillis muses mostly to herself. Who is to say which side is 'right' here? It hardly seems her place to decide.

And yet, Hillis decides to side not with a spirit or the people, but with Kokoro. The only lucid one here. And therefore, the only one who can have influence on Hillis' own place in this conflict. She'd rather not fight Kokoro.]

Then? Shall we persuade them with force?
stavros: Kokoro with her whip. ([a] introducing)

[personal profile] stavros 2022-02-01 04:00 am (UTC)(link)
They must atone for their sins, not be lured to rot in this mire.

[She looks to Hillis, then to some poor soul that's starting to twist and mutate into a Rumour.]

It seems to be the only option.

Satou | Kami of Love

[personal profile] ai_nnihilate 2022-02-01 04:09 am (UTC)(link)
(a) Snow Day at the Shrine of Love
[Snow is such a rare delight that even the Kami are having fun! The path to her shrine is miserable to climb during the snow season, so Satou has been clearing it manually. Kinda. She's also using the snow from the path to line said path with snowmen.

    It's very serious work!

The kind of serious that might damage her reputation if anyone found out it was her being a goofball. Satou is humming merrily as she decorates her latest creation with sticks and stones, lost in the bliss of winter fun, when she hears the snow crunch nearby. In an instant, she gasps and drops the decorations.]

Aaaah~ WELCOME TO THE SHRINE OF- [Turning around, she brushes her hands on her dress and laughs her way into a nervous grin,] - Looove~!

[Satou turns her back to the snowmen, acting like it isn't even there. Not that one, or the fifteen others that she already built early. Those snowmen stare down the path with judging stone eyes.]

    Uh can Iii help you?

(b) Winter's Warm Good Bye
[It's hard for Satou to mingle in the city. People see her red eyes and recognize her status as a Kami right away. And being one of the more well-known Kami, well... It has its perks, but blending in isn't one of them.

So the efforts to lure the Snow Kami are welcomed. They draw large crowds of people, allowing Satou to blend in and enjoy some fun. She's picked a cafe with a snow covered garden and is one of the few people sitting outside. It might be cold, but there are few people out here. Most of the activity is inside, where people hope to catch a glimpse of the Snow Kami. No one is looking for a brunette right now.

Unfortunately, that also means that the cafe is pretty crowded. When Satou sees someone enter the cold garden, she assumes they are struggling to find an open seat. She lowers her tea cup and waves lightly.]

Would you like to sit here with me? It's not so bad once you have a cup of tea~.
tigerpoet: inner upset (☽ will hardly serve your aims)

Two people whose destinies are intertwined are connected with a red string tied around their pinky fingers.

[He tugs his foot a little. Still connected.]

The details depend on the telling. Most legends like that have a few versions.

Kevin Graham | Trails in the Sky

[personal profile] fifthdomonion 2022-02-01 04:24 am (UTC)(link)
A - A Snowy Surprise

[This world had felt like a more purer form of Phantasma. It wasn't too long since Kevin had broken out of that horrific dimension, but who would've thought that he'd stumble his way into another. Well, he felt that he'd have to report this strange world over to the Gralsritter. Though Kevin would rather avoid writing long essay if he could help it... The point was that it was snowing! The snow had bought back some sad memories for Kevin, but that was all the more reason why he was in an extra cheerful mood.

Whoever is passing through is going to be hit with a snowball by your friendly neighborhood priest. Regardless if they're happy, angry or just don't care, Kevin is going to laugh and flash them a little wink.]

Hey, hey! Ya better keep your guard up or you'll get poked by an Ice Pecker next!

B - The Red String of Fate

[A red string, huh? On one hand, this could be troublesome if Kevin got caught up in a battle or if he was going to investigate more this city... But on the other hand, this would've made for an interesting way for him to get to know the person on the other end. He was sitting on a bench and playfully tugging his foot in the opposite direction that his partner was linked to. Whether or not his partner was trying to leave, Kevin was going to be keeping them on a leash. It's a bit calculated despite how laidback he was being.]

Sooo... As kinky as this is, I usually save this kind of thing for the third date. Got any bright ideas on how we should break free?

C - The Path Not Meant To Be Taken

[It was ironic how Kevin would've been in the same position as these people if he didn't get his act together a little while ago. He still had his regrets, but he wasn't going to let his past weight down his future. No one in this world was free of sin. He of all people had known this better than anyone. Well, he wouldn't be a priest if he didn't help out with this. Some of these people were transforming into monsters... He had to wonder if words really were this powerful in this world. He'd worry about the mechanics of this land later. For now, he had a job to do... Kevin isn't sure if killing these monsters would eliminate the civilians too, but he'd bear the weight if that was the case.]

Looks like we've got one hell of a pity party down here. [He'll pull out his bow gun as he turns to the other person with him.] How much experience do you have with combat?
blastiaobsessieanonymous: (Frown)

[personal profile] blastiaobsessieanonymous 2022-02-01 05:19 am (UTC)(link)
... I mean, that's how you get a lot done in research, sure. But I wasn't expecting it to be this cold all of a sudden!

[... Yeah, getting her to actually bother with a proper coat might be an important step.]

You're new here too, right?
stavros: Kokoro holding her regular whip. ([a] no tripping)

[personal profile] stavros 2022-02-01 05:20 am (UTC)(link)
Indeed. [Said while beating snow off of her scarf. She notes Rita's condition, frowns, and undoes said scarf to offer it over.] My name is Kokoro Belmont. Were you headed someplace? We should get out of the cold, given your condition.
blastiaobsessieanonymous: (Curious)

[personal profile] blastiaobsessieanonymous 2022-02-01 05:21 am (UTC)(link)
Was on my way back, actually. Though my place is a bit out...

[Rita sighs.]

Even without the cold, I don't much get this place, honestly.
stavros: Kokoro taking off in Stavros. ([a] fly on)

[personal profile] stavros 2022-02-01 05:28 am (UTC)(link)
It certainly is confusing. And aggravating. There is no shame in stopping -- perhaps one of the larger shrines is on the way, or an open business? I can accompany you. A far better choice than freezing out here unprepared.
blastiaobsessieanonymous: (Neutral)

[personal profile] blastiaobsessieanonymous 2022-02-01 05:33 am (UTC)(link)
... Erm. Sure.

I'm Rita Mordio, by the way. Magic researcher, back home. Not that Mana formulas work anything like what's here...
stavros: Kokoro about to use her whip. ([a] ready to go)

[personal profile] stavros 2022-02-01 05:37 am (UTC)(link)
It does appear that the aura in this place is empowering those who did not have the ability to start. Perhaps it means to be an equalizer?
blastiaobsessieanonymous: (Frown)

[personal profile] blastiaobsessieanonymous 2022-02-01 06:10 am (UTC)(link)
... I guess so? That's kinda depressing to think about, though.

I've spent as long as I can remember trying to master... Well, Blastia formula. And then Mana formula once Blastia ceased to be an option. Long story.

I mean, it's not like what I was doing wasn't trying to make things easier for others, but to see it already done here?

It's... Mm. I don't know.
stavros: Kokoro holding her regular whip. ([a] no tripping)
