【PLAYER PLOT: WATANAGASHI】

Watanagashi Day

It is the day of the Watanagashi: the third Sunday of June.

While it has only been a day since the events of the windchime rumor and everyone's kidnapping has passed, there is a shift in the air. There is much gossip about the celebrations today - for all of the locals and Fallen Stars, new and old, they may hear about the so-called Kami of Sin who is making preparations for what seems to be both a festival and the official opening of a brand new shrine.

While the Watanagashi festivities may be taking place primarily in the evening, there is still much to do in the early hours of the day.

Kimono Shopping
While the kami in question has told that people can come as they are, kimono shopping for the day seems to have spiked up in many of the clothing stores.

People may find themselves ushered to try something on in some of the stores, or even just given plain old suggestions as to what would look good on them.

And given how important this seems to be--after all, why wouldn't it be, when it's a big moment for a shining new kami in the citizen's eyes--they won't be charging anyone for their first kimono at this time. If you want more than one, however, that might be another story...

Shrine Preparations
During the day, people may notice that there is an influx of spirits at the newly built shrine up at the waterfall.

They seem to be making the final touches before the evening's opening; making sure that everything is clean and in place so that nobody gets hurt. While not asked to help, Fallen Stars may come to visit here if they wish to speak to Hanyuu before the proper opening.

Of course, help can be offered if they wish for that, given how much the spirits have been working over the course of the entire month.

For those who wish to explore the shrine, it's a rather standard one, reminiscent in some ways to the actual Furude shrine--but shinier. The stairs that lead to the torii gates are more cleanly cut and modern, the shrine building itself is larger.

Of course, there are your usual places: one where you can buy omamori, ema and the offetory for the kami themselves. Given that the shrine itself is not entirely polished yet, however, people cannot buy these things, but they can use the offetory. Sure, there's no proper form of money that needs to be used at her shrine, so offerings can be made using Starling or gifts. Although there would be no objection to any foreign money that someone decides to drop in there, if a Fallen Star really wished to do that.

The Festival Begins
Once the sun begins to set, the festivities begin.

All Fallen Stars and residents alike are invited. Which means that it's going to be rather crowded.

People may gather at the shrine to buy their omamori and hang their ema if they wish-- all of the ema will be read properly by the kami and handled after the festivities are over.

For those who wish to participate in affairs outside of the shrine, there are stalls where characters can get food of all kinds: takoyaki, cotton candy, you name it - it's all for the taking. There are also booths where you can play some summer festival games, such as catching your very own goldfish with a scoop, gun shooting, yo-yo fishing, and more.

There are even masks that are being offered in various styles, and you can even make your own as well!

Watanagashi Ceremony
Later in the evening, about a few hours into the festivities, people are asked to move to the main shrine grounds to watch a proper performance.

Hanyuu herself is wearing her a more proper miko outfit on the stage for the occasion, carrying a ceremonial hoe before speaking up.

Her voice is serious and booming. It is clear and can be heard all throughout the grounds.

"Everyone.

We are glad to see you on this Watanagashi evening.

My name is Hanyuu. I am also known as the kami, Oyashiro-sama.

As I do not have my miko here, I will be performing the ceremony myself. Then, I will give everyone a chance to use the ceremonial hoe themselves and open up the futon, if you would like.

I will then explain the rites of the ceremony as well as tell you the long story about myself."

She then bows to the crowd and begins the performance.

Characters are then ushered one by one to the stage after she's done to use the hoe for themselves. Characters may also go in pairs if they would like to as well.

Once everyone has had their chance with the hoe, Hanyuu will speak about her past -- who she is, and why the Watanagashi is being performed.

For those who are not scared off by her words, or managed to miss them entirely, they are then given a piece of cotton and are told to go to the waterfall. The instructions that they are given are to take the piece of cotton and touch it to your forehead, chest, navel and both thighs. They are to to this three times, while silently giving to Oyashiro-sama. They are told that by doing this, all the evil that possesses you is sucked out by the cotton, and then they can subsequently put it down on the surface of water.

OOC NOTES

  • Characters may hold their own stand if they wish. Stands ran by player characters can be either ones that they had informed Hanyuu beforehand or ones that they didn't tell her about at all. Scam stands are also very much welcome, but note that there will be consequences if they are caught. Let me know if you plan on running one as such.
  • Stands with food or games can be of things that are not listed above - just think of your standard bog fare festival games and food that you would find at a Japanese festival.
  • There will be a toplevel for characters to submit their emas and a toplevel for any offerings, so if your character decides to do either of these, please reply to the appropriate header.
  • For those unfamiliar with the terminology: ema are small wooden plaques that characters can write on for their prayers or wishes, which the kami will then receive and read them. Omamori are good luck charms, for which there are six types: the ward away evil charm, the safe travels charm, the education charm, the love charm, the money charm and the health protection charm. The offertory is a small place at the front of the shrine where characters can give their offerings to ask the kami something--usually a request to listen to a prayer or wish and is a way to show gratitude to the kami. Usually, it is done with coins, but given Starsand's currency, Starling may be used in its place. Characters are also welcome to give alternate offerings as well.
  • Any further questions, comments or concerns can be asked publicly on the questions toplevel. If you need to ask something privately, please do not hesitate to message me either through Plurk ([plurk.com profile] tsundereban) or Discord.
  • Please let me know if your character makes any decision to do anything destructive or any thievery on the grounds. There may be potential consequences to this action.
  • Due to the content warnings regarding Hanyuu's life, the story that she will tell will have its own separate toplevel with all the content warnings marked off.
  • Responses to the story of Oyashiro-sama will be watched by the mods for any potential IC consequences as well.
  • Also: Hanyuu is now permanently taking on her older form for all replies, so please keep that in mind.
